Interesting issue about the rehabilitation of serial killers, sex criminals etc. i read recently in some science journal on a long-haul flight about largely-repressed scientific information telling us that many people of that ilk are born with a deficit of the substance in the brain which causes empathy.

However, as they grow older, the body naturally compensates and starts to generate this chemical and most people have it by the time they are 40.

This chemical can apparantly be tested for in every individual.

Of course, not all violent crime is caused by this deficiency, most murders happen in a violent (often drink-fuelled) flash, a lot of extreme dysfunctional aggression comes from past bullying, and many sex offenders are warped through being childhood victims of sex crimes themselves. But the most extreme serial killers and multiple sex offenders all exhibited abnormally low levels of this chemical.

The implications for criminal justice are staggering, it means that you could basically release all murderers and rapists who showed they had a deficit of this chemical, but had subsequently generated it;

Test children and teenagers for this chemical and monitor or even imprison innocent ones who showed a deficit.

No wonder the autorities are somewhat reluctant to go there.
