Newspaper report in March 2006

A TEENAGE sex offender who tried to take a prison officer hostage was given a life sentence yesterday and warned he may never be released.

William Bermingham, 19, attacked the female officer, 40, with a homemade knife in Polmont young offenders' institution. A few days earlier, she had revoked his privileges. He was serving a five-year sentence for attempted rape and the High Court in Edinburgh heard yesterday he had been assessed as posing a high risk to the public.

Reports revealed that Bermingham, whose father is also a convicted sex offender, had refused to co-operate with programmes aimed at addressing his problems.

Lord Hardie said that if he imposed a fixed sentence, the youth would have to be freed at the end of it whether or not he had taken part in anger management and sex counselling. However, under a life sentence, the parole board would have the ultimate say on when he could be freed.

"You will not be released until the parole board are satisfied it is safe to do so and it may be you will never be released," said Lord Hardie.

In 2001, Bermingham admitted indecency offences against girls aged 14 and 15 and was placed in secure accommodation. Later, he stayed in a flat in Grangemouth under 24-hour supervision but sneaked out when the prison officer watching him went to bed. He grabbed a girl, aged 17, at knifepoint and tried to rape her, for which he received the five-year sentence.

The attack in Polmont was committed in June last year. Bermingham was charged with assaulting the officer with intent to rape her, but pleaded guilty after the sexual aggravation charge was dropped.

It often amazes me how some inmates take the moral high ground against other inmates and decide to "do them in".

It's quite obvious that they too, are in the jail for a reason.

I hate what Peter Tobin has done and he deserves to be where he is, I also have no sympathy for him being attacked. However, that does not make it alright for another prisoner to give him a hammering and if the guy is found guilty, I hope he gets more time added to his sentence.

The point I was making wasn't regarding his crimes..... I think I said that.

Basically I'd be happy for them all just to fk each other up. I assume you're all for these guys being rehabilitated and given day release, allowed to sit and watch TV in their cells all day and play computer games etc etc

One of my mates was inside for 18 months and said that it was like a holiday camp and the only things that bothered him were little things such as he couldn't just go to the shops whenever he wanted.

He had Setanta in his cell and got to watch games every Sunday, got to play 5s twice a week and play pool etc.

IMO that's why people re-offend because they're not bothered about the consequences. Anyway, I digress, I'm glad he got battered regardless of who done it.
