Suspect it will be near enough 1:1 for the foreseeable future, but the Post Office was offering the worst, rather than the best, rates today

Each to their own, but I use prepaid travel cards when going for $ and euro and Caxton generally better the PO rates by a good 1-2%

I'm going to Amsterdam in March and away again in June. Don't know whether to just get my euros now for Amsterdam or hope that it improves even slightly before then :grr:

Broadly, exchange rates fluctuate according to the supply and demand for each currency. That in turn swings on the outlook for each country's economy.

Basically, every economist just now has the UK economy going to hell in a hand basket, meaning that we will be forced to push down interest rates to near zero, lessening the attractiveness of investing funds over here ....etc etc etc

FWIW I reckon as more is revealed in 2009, there will be a few skeletons emerging from the economy in Europe and the £/Euro exchange rate will strengthen again. But it won't get back to the rates of early 2008 for a long time.

What do you think it'll be like in June time pal?

Off to Berlin in February for 4 days and hedged my bets earlier this week by buying some euros as it was a 1.00:1.00 rate. If  it creeps back up I'll get some more but I don't expect it to.

Berlin isn't more expensive than this time 5 years ago, it's just the exchange rate that's the crippler! I've lost around 1/3 of my take home pay since the pound took a nose dive. Think I'll retire early
