Surprised there's nothing else already on here, but Zavvi have today been placed into administration, following the collapse of Woolworths.
Also strong rumours today that PC World and Halfords are also seriously struggling.

That's what happens when you overprice all your goods. See all three above for examples.
Zavvi has always been sht anyway. Shops like Zavvi, HMV and FOPP will struggle to compete with the online retailers and should have moved the direction of their businesses long before now.
And I know there are wider implications for people etc etc but I'm just referring to the shops and their goods before anyone gets all worked up.

PC World should be OK as it's part of the DSG Group, which also own Currys (which is what is causing them the issue IIRC) as well as online sites like Dixons and Pixmania.
It does just show how many electrical items are now being sold on the internet when they're having a tough time.

Completely agree with you. The Zavvi on Princes Street was one of the biggest rip offs on the street and it's no surprise they got found out given that an HMV was literally like two doors down. :agree:
It's the only place i ever went to that priced 360 games at their full 50 quid RRP :bitchy:
Although i can't say i'm sad to see Zavvi go, i do worry now that HMV are the only real shops of that sort of nature on the High Street and i'm still a big fan of going into shops and buying things and they're now pretty dominant in that area. :bitchy:

:agree: not just online retailers like Play and CD wow but shops like Morrisons & Asda as well. I am always gobsmacked to see how many folk are buying in the HMV in the Almondvale Centre  Are folk that silly or just plain lazy :dunno:
Zavvi were supplied by Woolies so no surprise really.
Doesn’t affect me but I’d bet there's been more money lost through their gift vouchers than were lost through the Fairpack Christmas Club a couple of years ago. In all fairness I hope the club folk do get their money back but I suspect there will be little or nothing done for the Zavvi voucher holders.

Spot on..most of these chains were struggling in the 'boom' so no surprise to see them totally unprepared for the down turn....MFI is another store that totally overcharged for their goods and failed to change their models in the face of better competition.
American motor firms are another perfect example of poorly run businesses getting found out.
Of course it's tragic for the staff but if the market exists for these stores products you can be sure someone will be along to fill the gap, if not then you have to question why the existed in the first place.

Bad news this is on their site
I have a zavvi gift card/voucher (UK and Northern Ireland), can I redeem it?
Notice to Gift Card / Gift Voucher holders (UK and Northern Ireland) - 31st December 2008
All Gift Card / Gift Voucher holders are required to write to the Joint Administrators at the following address, quoting their Gift Card / Gift Voucher number (s), enclosing original Gift Card / Gift Voucher (s) and quoting their full name and address for return correspondence.
No Gift Card / Gift Voucher (s) will be redeemed in store:
zavvi Vouchers
c/o The Joint Administrators
Ernst & Young LLP
100 Barbirolli Square
Manchester
M2 3EY
Legally the Administrators have a duty to act in the interest of all creditors to realise company assets and distribute funds according to strict legal priorities as defined by the Insolvency Act and are therefore unable to prefer one creditor over another.
As soon as the Directors became aware of the problems with EUK (27th November 2008), zavvi's main supplier, they sought to protect customer interests by lodging funds into a trust account. Until this time the Directors had no reason to believe there would be any issue regarding the sale of Gift Cards / Gift Vouchers from their stores. The sale of Gift Cards / Gift Vouchers was terminated on 4th December 2008. It is hoped that customers who purchased zavvi Gift Cards / Gift Vouchers from 27th November 2008 will receive a refund in respect of these Gift Cards / Gift Vouchers.
Regrettably all other Gift Card / Gift Voucher holders have been asked to make an unsecured claim with the Joint Administrators, in doing so they will be eligible to share in any distribution of monies available to unsecured creditors. Please follow the instructions outlined above for Gift Cards / Gift Vouchers purchased after 27th November to make a claim as an unsecured creditor.
We appreciate customer's frustrations but we do ask that all customers who have Gift Card / Gift Voucher (s) follow the correct procedure outlined above.

Looks like I'll never even get the chance to shop in Zavvi having been away since it opened!
As for HMV, used to shop a lot there but for the last couple of years I would only ever use it for the 3 dvds for 20 quid type offers that are always on. Who would pay 12 quid or so for an album from there when you can get it a couple of quid cheaper in a supermarket or nearer half price online??
