Given Sterling's spectacular fall against the Eoro and the dollar, holidaying in the UK will seem like quite an attractive prosect for the next couple of years or so.

Torquay in Cornwall and St Ives in Devon would be good if you wanted a sun ans sea type holiday.

London is exciting to visit, but having lived there for 5 years, I wouldn't suggest more than a week.

Scotland is obviously beautiful, but the weather is restrictive.

Where else would you suggest people should go for a UK summer holiday?

We hired a boat/barge with a retractable roof for a week on the Norfolk Broads a few years back and it was ace. Really easy to drive and you moor up whereever you like almost. Got the good weather whilst we were there and visited places like Yarmouth (Guid beach) and Norwich (Good for exploring about), stopping for our own BBQ's & also guid meals at pubs dotted along the way. There's no locks to worry about either.

Worth looking into if ye fancy something a bit different. :agree:

I’ve got a choice next year.

A caravan down in Cornwall where we’ve been in the past and enjoyed it or two weeks in a hotel, all inclusive, in Salou which we recently enjoyed.

Taking into account all the costs the caravan is about £350 cheaper, or about £70 each – add in unlimited access to Portaventura its £700 more expensive.

Next year I’m off to sunny Spain :singing:

Torquay in Cornwall and St Ives in Devon

It's the other way around, Davey. I've stayed in both but would suggest there are nicer places to take a break in these two counties.

St. Ives is a nice place but gets incredibly busy. Sometimes it's even difficult to park your car there. I prefer St. Agnes, Polzeath, Mousehole, Padstow and Mevagissey. Port Isaac and Boscastle are also really attractive smaller places well worth looking into.

Regards Devon, I can recommend Barnstaple, and Woolacombe on the north coast whilst Brixham is a good alternative to Torquay on the 'riveria'.

Down on the south coast Salcombe is a beautiful resort. Smaller friendly places such as Dawlish Warren are worth looking out for too. Teignmouth is a nice choice too.

The great thing about both counties is that it's not too far to travel to other interesting towns, villages and resorts.

Finally next door county, Devon is not to be sniffed at either. In particular Weymouth is a lovely old traditional resort.

Me too! Good pubs and plenty of them! Great place if you have dogs - we take ours there regularly and as you say it's only a couple of hours down the road!

Keswick is particularly good!

North Yorkshire has a lot going for it. Quite different in nature to the Yorkshire Dales (which have great appeal of their own), it's reasonably accessible from Scotland too.

There are some beautiful villages along the coast including Staithes, Runswick Bay and the slightly larger and much busier Robin Hood's Bay. Add the major resorts of Whitby and Scarborough and there's a lot of variety in this part of the world. Inland, Pickering is very popular.

It's particularly good for anyone who enjoys hiking. The Cleveland Way has some superb walking - particularly on the cliffs overlooking the North Sea which reach up to six hundred feet.

The New Forest is really nice, apart from the traffic jams. Cracking wee country pubs serving good bar lunches, canny beat it if the weather's good. And if you like horses then you're sorted!

Far rather go abroad though.

Durham is nice - I know someone who offers reasonable rates for digs and a free tour round the SoL :greengrin

Does that come with insurance, as that could be a deal breaker for me

Chester is lovely. We did the 4 day trip with Caledonian Travel a couple of years ago. It was dead cheap, the hotel and meals excellent and the day trip to Wales was good except for the rain:wink:

PS The bar man was fab. My two grandkids came over for two evenings from Warrington with their parents. He must have given each of them £20 each per night to play the bandit. He wasn't bothering as the perk of his job was the profits from the bandit.

We also lost our way coming down from our room on the first day and ended up in the kitchen. Dave got speaking to the chef and as Dave is a big eater(thats putting it politelly_ he is a gannet) told the chef that he was feart that the helpings would be wee but the chef made sure we were the first served each meal with Dave getting a double helping

Good point.

How are the exchange rates in those countries? Is the Pound holding up?

Not interested in Bulgaria, though. I was there a few years ago and was far from impressed.

I love the Perthshire Highlands up to Aviemore area - my fiance's grandparents have a caravan in Aberfeldy, on the banks of the Tay - with Dewar's distillery, the Birks, the quaint wee shops, J.K.Rowlings house (if you know where it is of course ), it's a cracking place to spend a short vacation. There's also watersports, Loch Tay is nearby, as is Dunkeld, the Hermitage, Pitlochry...

We were at Kenmore in the summer the day the sun was out( i think it was one of three this year) and there is no better spot for a relaxing day. The pub there claims to be Scotlands oldest. Anybody know the oldest pub still in business?

Northumbria is one of my faves - 1 1/2 to 2 hours away and long sandy beaches like Alnmouth and quiet villages like Warkworth. Ideal if you have small children as I do.You've also got Morpeth close by. We had the first week in May there last year and got the hottest week of the year.

For us caravan-dwelling peg-sellers I also recommend the Appleby Horse Fair to keep up on the latest peg trends :dizzy::faf:

I am very fond of Perthshire too but can't imagine how knowing the location of J K Rowling's house or being in its close proximity would bring any further enjoyment to my holiday?

The fall in the value in Sterling is frightening-25% against most Euro or non Euro currencies including quoted countries like the Czech republic and Slovakia. The only countries that make sense in terms of value are S Africa +6% and Turkey -4.5% in the last year
