View Full Version : I love markets, but …
Mrs Jack and I went for a wee walk round East Princes Street Gardens last night. A stroll round the stalls in the gardens and then round the ones by the art gallery.
What a blummin rip off. :grr:
Now you might expect to pay a wee bit more for the ambience and all that. But why?
Any markets I’ve been to abroad, lots in Germany and Spain have all had ‘luxury’ items that cost a lot, relatively speaking. Then there's all the other stuff, mixed quality and prices but you can usually find something at these markets that make you smile enough to want to buy.
Well all I can say about the stalls in PS was everything, aye everything, that I saw was either overpriced crap or expensive crap or just crap with some real tat thrown in. And I would estimate that most stuff was on average two and half times more expensive that could be bought elsewhere - even in the tatty touristy shops around town.
Folk wandering about thinking ‘Well we don’t do this very often / made the effort to come here, might as well spend a wee bit more than we would normally.’
It’s a shame really because the visitors ‘we’ are so desperately wanting to attract will be hearing stories from their pals saying “What a ****ing rip off Edinburgh is, I’ll not be going back there.”
All I can say is thank f*** I didn’t have my 3 kids with me. The pressure to remortgage to fund the trip would have been intense.
Anybody feel the same or indeed has anyone had a good experience of rip off Edinburgh?

I really like the German market and the Chrismas fair.
I don't want any of the goods on sale so the prices don't bother me, but if they're too expensive, they won't sell.
I usually have a mug or two of mulled wine, but this year I had mulled beer. In this cold weather, it's fantastic.
£3.50 a glass though, Jack.
You'd hate it.

Asked one of the guys at work (who's wife is German) if he'd been said it was a rip off. his view was that some of the products they are punting a cheaper in Lidl and whats worse they are the same make so no real excuses.
So how much for a pitch :greengrin

That, in a Christmas nut-shell, is the issue. The Council charge a fortune for the sites, so the traders have to charge high prices.
Many of them try it once, and don't come back.
£4.50 for a cheeseburger :grr: - stuff that!! Just nip over the road to McDonalds or Burger King and get the same thing for a £1 :greengrin

Much the same as me and the missus.
Rarely buy anything either but go in more for the atmosphere and a glass of mulled wine. Like you however we tried the mulled beer this year. Majestic so it was.

Their steak rolls were excellent. I absolutely love Bratkartoffeln too, you can't go wrong with Mulled Wine and where else can you get beer and coke in the same glass?!!

I agree, Jack. Some decent stuff, but hardly premium, and can be easily sourced for around half the price of the market 'experience.' It's nice to see Edinburgh doing things like this, but its shooting itself in the foot in the long run on price.
