Does anyones work insist on "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas"?

I'm watching American Dad and it got me thinking

I heard that there was a bit of a stushie at the head office of the CAB when some Jewish members of staff complained about christmas being celebrated. A true story, luckily they were told where to sling their hook.

If people want to be offended by something that has gone on for generations in this country then the solution is simple.

I'm not religious but xmas is a time to have fun and be with the people you like/love.

I am actually offended by people who complain about the things that have gone on in this country for years. Who can I complain to so that I can get them to fk / respect the majority of peoples feelings?

We have various window cleaners come round the work, some more regular than others.

Last year one of the particularly more social of the gang came in and was his usual bubbly self.

As usual, I made a bit of convo out loud on behalf of my shy and retiring colleagues......"You any plans for Christmas"

Dead Pan the guy turns and says "I don't celebrate it.....don't believe in it, so I don't do it." then walks out.

Everyone just looked at each other in open amazement.

It gets my blood boiling when I see decorations up that say something like "Happy festive season" or "Happy Holidays". The people who display such signs normally say that it is to prevent people of other faiths from being offended.

I've yet to come across a Muslim, Jew, Sikh, Hindu etc. who says that they are offended by the word "Christmas" or are offended by people celebrating it. It's usually Atheists from the PC brigade that are putting forward these 'brilliant' and inclusive ideas. These are usually the same people that fall over themselves to promote diversity and multiculturalism and can't wait to wish people a happy Eid or Diwali but as soon as Christmas comes around, it's almost like a taboo subject.

What they seem to forget is, if it wasn't for the Christian religion itself, they wouldn't be having a "happy festive season" or a "happy holiday" at all. Another favourite of mine is the use of "Xmas". I hate seeing that anywhere.

I don't think that they are but if people from other religious backgrounds are sad enough to be seriously offended by Christmas then it's just too bad. What about Christians who might be offended by people effectively secularising one of the main celebrations in their faith?

If you don't wish to celebrate Christmas then that is no problem whatsoever, that is your choice and you're entitled to your beliefs and opinions. Just don't go around pretending that it's got nothing to do with religion or spoil it for the people who do want to celebrate Christmas in the proper way.

PS-Merry Christmas when it comes, everyone!

I always say Merry Christmas to everyone i serve in Boots. I haven't yet had a bad reaction yet so that works for me. Personally i have absolutely no problem with anyone celebrating Christmas however they like if they want to say Happy Holidays, Christmas whatever. To me it's the sentiment and joy inherent in the event itself not how it's celebrated or how people are greeted but for me it's alway got to be merry Christmas because that's what it is after all!

P.S. Absolutely love that episode of American Dad:

"Dammit Donald you Kiefer spawning *******!"

gets me every time :rotflmao:

I wouldn't pretend that it has got nothing to do with religion, but if we are being honest these days it has very little to do with religion. I still, and will continue to, call it Merry Christmas, but celebrate it purely out of tradition and enjoying spending time with family.

I work with a hugely diverse bunch of people, in my section alone we have 2 Muslims, a Sikh, a Hindu, 2 Christians and a lone athesit(myself). I've yet to find any of us be offended by Christmas, we all chat about it freely, exchange cards etc etc. I don't belive in God, Jesus, Mohammed, Vishnu or any other religous character, however i respect other peoples right too and enjoy the season for it's tradition and sense of fun. As do most in the UK regardless of religous persuasion.

As for the use of the word Xmas, i think people should be perfectly entitled to use such a phrase, the festivities in December where around long before Christianity and like most Christian festivals it is a hi-jack of an old pagan celebration. If people don't belive in Christ and wish to call Christmas by another name eg Xmas, the festive season etc they are just as entitled to do that as you are to call it Christmas and celebrate it in peace.

I've no problem at all with non-Christians celebrating Christmas by giving gifts, having time with family etc. The problem I have is with the people who put up decorations and signs at this time of year saying things like "Season's Greetings" and "Happy Festive Season" to supposedly avoid offending people of other religions which is then turning Christmas into a secular event and they are trying to pretend that it has nothing to do with religion.

That is my only gripe. People can celebrate/not celebrate Christmas any way they like.

I didn't say people aren't entitled to call it "Xmas" I'm just saying that I hate seeing it written, that's all. Although some of the traditions that are linked to Christmas and also the time of year that Christmas is celebrated, have links to Paganism, the word "Christmas" has nothing to do with Pagan tradition, it is purely Christian based and that's why I don't believe in "Xmas" being used.

As for the first part of your post, I'm agreeing with you. I don't know of any non-Christian religious person who is offended by Christmas. Which proves my point that it is daft that some people try to avoid using the word in case people find it offensive.

Exactly, there is nothing to be offended about. Christian people peacefully celebrating the birth of their saviour, and the whole country having a holiday and relaxing with their family.

I acutally don't mind it written as I normally do it to cut down on typing or just habit. It really pisses me off when people say it! WTF!!!
