As some of you may or may not know, I have had quite a few dealings of late with MacMillan Cancer care and really want to give something back. I had looked at their Kilimanjaro challenge but as I'm in and out and hospital until January, decided to scale it back a bit.

Now i'm not saying this is a walk in the park (well it is really if you take it literally) but it won't be easy but I'm looking to tie up with an idea from Hibby Radge who suggested a golf outing so thought I'd see if anyone else would fancy taking part in the MacMilan Cancer Longest Day Golf Challenge.

For those of you that don't know of it, it's 4 rounds of golf in one day with sponsorship proceeds going to MacMillan Cancer. The idea is that I'll contact as many clubs in a locality as I can and ask for 2 or possibly 3 courtesy times, (3 may be pushing it but I'll try anyway with promises of newspaper coverage and therefore "free" publicity of them supporting a worthwhile cause. If I can I'll see if I can get it to finish off at Dalmahoy so we can treat ourselves to a wee jaccuzzi and steam bath.

If anybody is interested, let me know so I know how many tee times I need at each course. I'm also trying to get Scott M involved as he organised a team last year.

As already noted on the other thread, i'd be keen to do this again next year and happy to help with the organisational side, so long as i'm not left to my own devices!

Done it last year, and as tiring as it was, it was a very rewarding experience!

No reason you wouldn't manage to get 4 courses for free! We managed it last year - including both Scotscraig and Downfield - both amongst the more prestigious courses up here. So long as the courses aren't too pretentious, then they're normally happy to help out! We asked Gleneagles last year and they were happy to host us, but were asking for £70pp per round, which was just too much. Still, a very generous offer, as it was more than half price!

Teams are usually either 3 or 4 players - you can do it individually or as a pair, but to be eligible for any of the prizes, it needs to be a team of 4! It relies on a lot of daylight, as it normally takes 3-4 hours per round - it's not played like normal golf, in the sense that it's played at a significant pace! We started at 7am last year and finished around 21.30pm! As such, it's best to do it through the summer.

If we can get enough teams involved, we can perhaps do it as an outing. This would make planning a lot easier as we can look to arrange big events to collect money as a group - this could be things from raffles, collections at Easter Road prior to the matches etc etc etc. From family sponsorhips alone last year, I managed to raise £700 on my own.

A collective group effort would also be good as it would allow two potential novelties. If the groups are primarily constructed from Hibs fans, we can perhaps look to get the club involved somehow, be it via publicity, sponsorship or involvement (perhaps some of the players may want to join in and boost our profile/quest?). It's also recommended that you get matching uniforms for each team - again, this could perhaps be done with Hibs colours/crests or perhaps be something we could get the club shop involved with?

In terms of progress, we could get a good online blog/website to monitor progress - video diaries (perhaps to get the HI team involved?), filming on the day, regular blogs etc etc etc.

I'm wondering if this is also perhaps something that could be merged into the Edinburgh Charity events? If we could get members of the Hearts supporters (via Kickback?), we could have an internal competition and maybe even follow the charity events which are currently being advertised, with a 2v2 format? The potential for publicity, both local and national, is immense if we can get enough of an involvement from people to perhaps get the clubs interested.

Jeez, i've gone on a wee bit - these are just preliminary ideas as well, so plenty of potential for expansion and development.

I'm aware next summer is a LONG way away, but would it be possible for one of the mods to make this a sticky, so it doesn't fritter away into the depths of the vault?

Ok I've done that for you boys.

I have to say this could grow arms & legs

Good work Scott, that's the sort of input/ideas I was looking for. I liked the idea about approaching the club to get involved as we could try and get polo shirts either free or with a good discount in return for publicity and if we could get players involved it would be massive.

I know it's still a long way until summer but I just thought more time the better to allow us to get the wheels in motion by approaching courses now before any other groups get in.

Going very well thanks mate. I'm in hospital right now getting chemo which seems to be working a treat an has killed off the main tumor (in my stomach this time) and the residual spots of cancer which showed in my liver and lymph nodes.

This is my 8th occurance of cancer and Macmillan as well as all the doctors, surgeons and nurses, have been absolutely fantastic the whole way through and I just feel it's time to give something back.:agree:

Sorry to hear that Houchy - I didn't realise you, personally, were affected so directly by this - guess I don't pay much attention on these boards at times.

When we completed the event last year, I done it for a friend of mine whom i'd known since primary school - she developed a tumerous mass on her spine, which quickly spread into her brain and killed her - she died the week before we completed the event. All 4 of us knew the girl well and she had introduced me to my now fiance - we were all fairly emotional come the end of the day.

I'm glad to see yours seems to be more of a success story and it will be nice to have another strong motivation this year.

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery and a chance to say "thank you" in style come the summer.

Just as an aside, I'll start taking details as I go just now, despite it being early days - can never be too organised and all that...

Can I start by asking for your proper names, so I can compile a list of folks interested.

If you'd rather not have your name displayed publicly for all and sundry to see, could you PM me please?

Thanks :agree:

If we could also get an idea of where everyone is located so we can try and accomodate people location wise as best as possible. I'm Bathgate so was thinking of only myself here and thought Bathgate, Deer Park, maybe uphall or Harburn (or Ratho, short course and pretty flat IIRC) and try to finish in style at Dalmahoy.

Obviously that suits me perfectly but we need to accomodate people as best as possible so if you could let us know your locations we can identify an area and start approching clubs from round there asap to get in first.

Sylar
04-12-2008, 10:28 AM
Im Bathgate also (well, Dundee, but for the sake of this, i'll use my home address).

I'm not adversed to travelling if needbe for this as I suspect there will be a few folks from Edinburgh and surrounding interested as well (hopefully anyway).

They say it's best to ask the course where you're a member first, as they're more likely to accomodate the request of a member for a free round.

Let me complicate it further by asking if I can have the following:

Name - Location - Membership? If so, where.

Cheers

I had a bit of a brainstorming session last night after thinking about this, and it really does have potential - maybe i'm thinking too big in some capacities, but as follows is a wee task list I came up with:

Allocate teams - dependant on numbers.

Register Teams - with team captains selected.

Find courses most suitable - based on location.

Book courses - based on most suitably chosen/member involvement.

Organise Uniforms - contact Hibs' club shop?

If numbers are significant enough, get the club involved:

Publicity - space in the programme, website etc...
Donation - in return for advertising on the uniforms?
Subsidised Uniforms - in collaboration with the club shop.
Involvement - perhaps some players/coaching staff/backroom staff will want to participate?
Celebratory dinner post event at ER and showcase of final achievements?

Establish a website to track progress, allow discussion etc - similar to the Charity Game events - allocate to someone with IT knowledge!

Involve the Hibs Interactive team? - publicitiy, video diaries, filming on the day?

Consider a league structure - try and get supporters from other football clubs in Scotland to create teams? The structure is based on a points system - where stableford scores are submitted, the highest of which goes forward for prizes at the very end and can win holidays, rounds of golf etc (for MacMillan in general). If enough clubs supporters' can get involved, we can establish a league and see who gets the highest points. Again, there's potential here to get actual clubs involved - show their support for MacMillan through supporting their fans? - this could be be potentially brilliant or potentially too big - it involves finding someone to go through the supporters forums of each club in Scotland and advertise the campaign. If interest is generated and we can get 1 or more teams involved, it then involves them allocating a liaison with their clubs to get their clubs involved....

Appoint a publicist from one of the various team members - contact local media to advertise (free) our challenge and inviting people to join/donate money. Arrange photoshoots before and after the event, with accompanying
interviews.

A list of potential courses in the Edinburgh and Lothians region:

Bathgate
Uphall
Pumpherston
Deer Park
Harburn
Dalmahoy
Silverknowes
Kings Acre
Bruntsfield
Prestonfield
Niddrie Castle

to name a few of the top of my head.

Wow, someones been busy.

There's "Killie fan" (or is it "the Doomed") who might be willing to take this to their board and see if someone is willing to take ownership from their site. Only problems that i can see though with the other clubs is that we are potentially looking at increasing the distances we'd have to travel by someway but i'm sure the Hearts fans that use .net would have no problem taking this to kickback.

I wasn't meaning we colaborate with other supporters and play it all together, as it might mean we'd end up travelling the length and breadth of Scotland!

I was suggesting that we get other club's supporters to do what we're doing - organise their own event and play it on their own time with their own courses and scores. We could try to arrange it so we all play on the same day.

Once we've finished, i'd get the other teams to submit their scores to me, and I could compile a league table based on results with something in it for the winner (if we get enough of a sponsorship, we could perhaps either buy, or get someone to donate a prize, such as a round of golf for the winning team at Carnoustie, Kingsbarns, Troon etc etc).

Plus there'd be the pride factor of knowing your supporters are the best golfers in Scottish Football :greengrin

No handicap restrictions whatsoever - I played with 2 guys last year who had NO handicap - I just allocated them one, based on their level.

Had a look on their website tonight and there's nothing up for the Longest Day yet - but it's a regular event, so it should be running.

I've had another 6 people register an interest in putting their names down in the last 2 days so that's about 3 teams so far. One of them is currently "experiencing technical difficulties" (ie a Yam:greengrin) but he's actually a good bloke who again, has had dealings with MacMillan in the last few years, one's a Chelsea fan and again a good bloke, 2 are hibby's that post on here and I don't think the other pair are all that fussed about football but can play a bit of golf and have contacts at Gullane (although maybe not easiest courses when playing 4 rounds in one day).

I've had two other PM's from people interested in taking part, so the total number interested (including Houchy's 6), we stand at 12. Which is awesome - Id love us to get to 16 or 20, but maybe im being greedy or over ambitious.

All parties who've been in touch are Edinburgh and Lothians, so the location can be anywhere in West Lothian or Edinburgh and surrounding.

5-6 months to plan this

Hopefully we are close to getting an idea of how many people are interested and where these people are located so we can start planning 6-8 clubs in the surrounding areas that I'll write to and request courtesy times.

As Scott mentioned, we've still got quite a bit of time before this takes place but I just wanted to get things started before anything is launched on the macmillan website and everyone starts applying to various goilf clubs for times, making it more difficult for us to get further times.

Great response so far though and I really am overwhelmed by everyones enthusiasm so thank you all for your intrest.:agree:

Hi Folks,

This is something i've read about before, I seem to remember a big thing in one of the golf mags last years about it, and while i'm fortunate enough to not be directly effected with the work Macmillan carry out I believe it is a very good cause.

I'd be more than willing to take part in this.

I've got good mate who's one of the pro's at dunbar so could come in useful with arranging courses.

Small update:

I've been utterly and totally swamped with Uni work for the last 4 months or so, and it doesn't look like letting up anytime soon, so I've put very little thought into this event.

I did check the MacMillan website today though and the details of the day are up if anyone fancies having a read over it:

As Scott says, the details are now up on their website so i'm going to start writing out to the relevant golf clubs.

After discussions with Scott, it turns out that a majority of people interested are in West Lothian with only 2 from Edinburgh. The courses we were therefore looking at were: Bathgate, Uphall, Turnhouse and hopefully Dalmahoy to finish with (the last 2 to try and accomodate the edinburgers).

If anyone is a member of any of these clubs, could you drop me a pm to see if we could use your membership status to soften up the relevant clubs.

Also if anyone as any objections to these courses, again please let me know as I will try to accomodate everyone as best I can.

Dates discussed were 9th or 10th of July although I am on holiday again from the 3rd for 2 weeks so maybe looking towards w/c 20th July (again, so long as everyone is cool with that.

Numbers wise we have around 12 people now (so 3 fourballs). If anyone can help with driving it would obviously be much appreciated. (I'm happy to drive if anyone needs picked up/dropped off).

Thanks everyone.
Lawrence.

Good luck! I tried Harburn last year - sent a letter, phoned twice and sent an email, but no-one ever got back to me. I asked for tee-times, or, failing that, a place to advertise our teams' efforts, or if they would sponsor one of their members (a competition winning member too ) and got nothing on all fronts!

Just make sure Harburn is an early one - walking up the 16th and 17th would be a bugger near the end of the day! :greengrin

Right,

That's Uphall and Turnhouse contacted with someone I know, who has been a member at Bathgate for a long time, speaking with them tomorrow.

As I stated previously, I am probably looking at week commencing 20th July and it will be during the week obviously so as to avoid disrupting club competitions/congested fairways etc so can everyone who is a definate please PM me with names, telephone numbers, location, if you can drive and, if so, are you able to help with shutteling your team from course to course so that I can delegate 1 driver per team.

The clubs we are presently looking at are Bathgate, Uphall, Turnhouse and Dalmahoy (if you don't ask you dont get), with possible reserves being Pumpherston, Deer Park, Harburn and maybe Ratho depending on responses from the other 4.

The West Lothian Courier are running a story on this and as we are also incorporating Edinburgh courses, I'll also approach the Evening News. I'll also contact local businesses for sponsorship (maybe through Real Radio or Forth 1). I know some companies ie Sky and maybe HSBC do a pound for pound for charity events for their staff so if anyone elses company operates a similar sheme then all the better.

Oh yeah, and if you could also PM me address so I can get the Sponsor Packs sent out to you.

I'm just off the phone to the secretary at Harburn, and she can't see a problem with it (said we'd tee off around early morning, get 16 and 17 out of the way as previously suggested ) She asked for me to give her something in writing that she could put before the committee as a courtesy, so once we know exactly how many times we need, I'll be able to do that

And I'm definately in by the way

Uphall are happy to accomodate us.

So hopefully it will be:

Bathgate, (or Harburn or Pumpherston) at around 06:00 for 09:30 finish

Uphall at around 10:00 for 13:30 finish (confirmed)

Turnhouse around 14:00 for 17:30 finish (confirmed)

Dalmahoy (or Ratho) 18:00 for 21:30 finish (90% sure I can get Ratho through connections but will try for Dalmahoy even just to ask if we can access leisure facilities afterwards to wind down)

Both Uphall and Turnhouse are happy with our times based on the 23rd (Thursday) so I think that's the date set.

Again can anyone who hasn't yet confirmed they can play, or anyone else who would like to play please do so so that I can allocate teams. Please also PM me your address for sponsor forms and if you can drive as I am trying to designate 2 drivers per team (so that we can get from course to course in our teams).

Thanks

Have you not already got my address Lawrence?

I don't mind driving.

I think Scott M got most of the names and addresses quite early on so I'll check with him to see who's details he has.

I'm more just trying to get names of definates so I can get the teams put together at this point mate (you're already added).

Just checked with Scott and he only has your phone number and location but no address. There's no massive rush but if you could PM me with your address so I can send you out your sponsorship pack.

Thanks

It was early days, so I didn't see the point in taking masses of information quite so early on

Just remembered, I actually know one of the teaching professionals and the Director of Golf (if it's still him) up at Dalmahoy. Not sure how much weight that would be able to add to us, but it might be worth a try if you'd like me to see if I can find either of them?

Good news this looks to be all go.

Are we still going to get in contact with the club, maybe raise awareness through the matchday programme or ask for Hibs poloshirts for us to wear.

Could a race night or something along those lines be run at the club again to raise more cash.

Yeah. Although I wanted to hold off until we had confirmed courses, teams and dates before getting Hibs involved.

I've scrapped the idea of getting other supporters groups involved. Too much work with little end benefit to either the event, or the charity. Best we just focus on our efforts, which are going well by all accounts!

I'd thought about asking if they would be so kind as to do both of your ideas. We need to have uniforms (in the sense of matching tops), so I thought it would be good to see if we could get them to do polos, thus helping us out and allowing Hibs to gain some reputation by showing they support their supporters and charities at the same time! I'd like to ask someone who has been a long-term season ticket holder (out of our group) to get in touch with the club. I'm a relatively new Hibs fan, and due to Uni commitments, I've never owned a ST, so I don't think I would be the best person to approach the club. Best having someone with better ties than me?

Do the club have a particular individual who organises the programme - I'd say he should be the next point of contact once we have our itinerary confirmed!

At the moment, we have/hoping for:

Harburn: 1st Course, 3x4balls, 6.00am
Uphall: 2nd Course, 3x4balls, 9.30/10am
Turnhouse: 3rd Course, 3x4balls, 14.30pm
Dalmahoy: 4th Course, 3x4balls, 18.30pm

Should allow us to finish around half 9. If we get Dalmahoy, we'll have a chance to rest, use their facilities, have some dinner together once we're done!

Do we have a provisional incase Dalmahoy aren't happy with this? From past experience in dealing with them, they're usually reluctant to part with freebies, even for charity! To continue with accomodating those from Edinburgh, I had discussed the possibility of Lothianburn with Houchy (as I think we have someone taking part who is a member there?). I'm sure Ratho was also mentioned....

If we get Ratho, would it be worthwhile asking if Dalmahoy would allow us access to their leisure facilities anyway?

We need to arrange ourselves into 3 set 4 balls. This is pretty rigid once the teams are registered with little opportunity to move around, so we'll need to establish a way of devising them.

B and D for team Turnbull, I would like to fill with two friends, Tony Wright and Mark Whelan as they both work together and play golf regularly together. One's a tim and the others a Chelsea fan (but he is from London).

"C" would be a guy (Mike Eprile) I know from my old work.

Turnhouse have changed us to 13:45 which means that we'll need to play uphall in a max of 3.5 hours (so 10-13.30 then 15 mins to get to turnhouse).

I did request 14:00 on 2 occassions but got 14:30 and 13:45 which makes me think there may be an outing at 14:00 so at least this way we'll get away before that and maybe have an additional 15 mins to grab a soup and a sandwich or a coffee.

It was to do with that, apparently the captain wanted to move that item up from number 8 on the agenda to number 1, and said that if he didn't get the 75% backing he needed then he'd walk, and this got a few people's backs up, and most voted against him, and he resigned, along with what appears to be most of the committee :dummytit:

Quick suggestion - check and see if any of your workplaces do a "Matched Giving" program. We applied for this last year, when I (and my boss) were working for HBoS - they matched £500 donation, to give us a "total raised" of £1500!

I've only just found this out today - left the company 8 months ago, and they sent me a letter, which I've only just received!

Lawrence I was speaking with the Harburn secretary today and they would have been delighted to jave us. Quick suggestion to be shot down if need be. (sounds bad but I know what I mean) Harburn will give us the 2pm tee time if you wish to ditch Turnhouse. It may be better for the travel to Dalmahoy at half fiveish during the week with a quick nip[ along the A71. Getting from Turnhouse to Dalmahoy at that time of night might be a bit tight with the gyle and Mayury junctions to negotiate? Happy to go anywhere to be honest but the logistics may be better and Harburn are happy to accomodate. Just let me know.

And Harburn is flatter and an easier walk than Turnhouse (especially the 1st and 10th holes!!)...

Being the lightweight that I am, I was gone before the festivities kicked off! And besides, alcohol fuels most of today's problems - not an issue in your day I would imagine

I've never played Turnhouse, so can't compare, but if it's hillier than Harburn, then it seems an easy option, to go for Harburn - particularly with the flexibility and easier route to Dalmahoy.

Nice to have a choice though, and I think Turnhouse should still be acknowledged for their offer to host us. It's just a shame that the timings have proved an issue.

Amen - the effort you're putting in, and continuing to put into this event will not only benefit others who have been through/are going through the hell you've experienced, but give an example of hope, and what can happen.

I would love to post something in response to all your comments and to sum up what's happened since I decided to try and arrange teams for this event but I truely am humbled and totally speechless. It's actually quite scary how much of a monster this has become in the last 24 hours.

This is my 5th attempt at posting something that doesn't sound like gratuitous pish and I realise that I'm still not there yet.

I'm actually quite scared of where it's going next and I really appreciate everyones efforts in taking part.

Thank you.

I'm quite simple speechless reading the stories. And 2nd most read story on the Sun's website today, too!

We had a personal reason for doing it last year - I lost a friend I'd known since primary 1 to a brain tumour - she was only 21 and it was a big shock. I think it helps to have the motivation.

This may sound wrong (but Lawrence will know what I mean), but I'm glad we also have another personal drive/reason for doing it this year.

This really is utterly unfathomable how big this is. We had no publicity last year, struggled to get courses/interest and it passed very quietly. This is truly a monster.

Perhaps now we have the teams/courses sorted AND have media coverage of the event, it would be an idea to get in contact with Hibs and let them know our intentions, and send them copies of the stories (if there are more we can get a hold of, then great!) to highlight the background of the event.

I'm not sure what I hope to achieve from getting in contact with the club. My various ideas were:

Programme space on Matchdays to highlight the cause to other hibby's who may wish to sponsor us/also try the event themselves?
Sponsor us directly?
Get the club shop to make our uniforms at a charitable rate?

As I've said before, I don't mind getting touch the Hibs myself, but I'm not very "old" in terms of seasons served. I feel it would be better for a long-term supporter/existing ST holder to get in touch and see what they can do?

I'm in the middle of setting up a Justgiving website, which we can use to collect donations online for the event - I had one last year and it really helped!

Fantastic! and thank you!

I'll leave the composition of the material (letter, email, whichever you'd prefer) to you. I only ask that you include hyperlinks (or press clippings?) to the stories which are in today's papers, to highlight the background.

As an aside, I've managed a preliminary webpage for collecting donations. The text box on the right, with the bulk of the details will not let me separate into paragraph format, so it looks a bit cluttered!

Hey Houch,

I think opting for Harburn is the best option to be honest - they seem to be going well out their way to accommodate us and I imagine it will be easier to get to Dalmahoy at the end of it.

Turnhouse shouldn't go unmentioned when we get to the post-event press release though (which is usually compulsory to update everyone on how we done!) - its just a shame the timings haven't worked out - their offer is still generous!

And now be honest - how many takes did it take for the STV film crew to catch you sinking that putt

Your work in the last few days has been nothing short of amazing. Keep it up! :top marks

It was only an 8 foot putt but kept on taking a bobble left or right. It actually took 8 or 9 takes but then they threw a ball down about 20ft away just to get the face shot and I canned it first time, hence the laughing.

It was actually the bunker shot that was the best laugh. I thinned it about 20yards over the back but they just lobbed one onto the green underhand. They made me look like Tiger.:greengrin

I was thinking that whilst walking up it yesterday - it's hard enough getting up the hill after 1 round, but to have done it at the end of the 3rd will be an absolute killer! And if Dalmahoy have offered their East Course, then we're in for a world of pain!

Was playing Drumoig today and I'm playing Monifieth with Lex and TQM tomorrow, followed by another round at Drumoig on Thursday - gradual conditioning!!

Do you think it might be worth a shout contacting the likes of The Carrick, Loch Lomond and St Andrews to ask if they would donate a 4 ball for auction for the charity. I suppose it wouldn't hurt and the worst they could say is "no".

Probably worthwhile asking all, bar Loch Lomond. They are very strict about the "members only" and "guests of members" rule. To their detriment right enough, as it cannot be sustainable!

Do you think it would be worthwhile organising a racenight/casino night somewhere, to try and raise money, and include a raffle as part of it?

Does anyone have any experience at setting up fundraising events?

I've suggested to Houchy the idea of having a casino night/racenight to raise monies for our efforts.

Bathgate Golf Club regularly host a casino night for the Bathgate PHAB (physically handicapped and able bodied) Club, where they raise funds to help pay for outings for disabled children in the area. They charge £10 entry fee per person, which covers your evening of gambling (you get £100/£200 in paper money) and also provides a buffet. You're allocated into a number of teams and whatever team is the winner at the end of the night takes away prizes (also prizes for the individual with the most money, runners up etc etc).

Prizes will normally be donated and a raffle is usually added in to help raise additional funds.

I have the concept, but no clue where to start either!

Anyone?

Just got back from the driving range at Houston (opposite uphall) and the pro came out and said he saw my articles in the papers and has donated 2 x 45 minute lessons to be raffled for the charity. I didn't even ask for them, he just came out and gave me the voucher:top marks.

As I mentioned on an earlier post when I emailed the club last week I did mention that we would like to use the facilities at ER for an event.

I've still not heard anything back from the club, not even an acknowledgement.

I may have to follow this up with a phonecall.

Just for a visit or are you being given air-time?!? :greengrin

I've passed the details of our event onto the University of Dundee events department, to see if there's anything they can do, with an eye to publicly supporting us, either via direct donation or publicity (perhaps getting our Cancer Research centre at Ninewells to support us).

They may also be able to provide some form of sponsor/polo-shirts or something for us if Hibs are perhaps unable to.

Good work on the other fronts Scott.

As an aside, Greg Muir has pulled out as he's going on holiday with his girlfriend. Without sounding horrible, I'm viewing this as a positive thing as it's not so late that it's going to cause any problems but it may also allow us to get someone of a higher profile in (maybe Roughie who likes a wee round of golf to himself), or one of the Hibs squad (maybe we can find a new vocation for AoB)

If the club can't help us with facilities, donations or shirts, I wonder if they would donate a hospitality day for 4 for a game next year. Beginning to look a wee bit quiet on that front...

I believe our donation forms will go to the team captains and then be distributed from there. That's certainly how it worked last year.

The 3 captains are me, Tony Wright and godsahibby (all driving), but as H18sry has received his, it seems they are being sent out directly.

As a more "personal" team issue Houch, can we decide who is all driving from each team? We'll need 2 cars per team. If you're driving, we need one more out of myself, Alex and our other member. Although I don't mind driving, the space in my car isn't enough to hold 2 people and 2 clubs.

Pah, ponces in sports cars. I've got a 3 series so could probably fit in 3 sets if need be or we can see if Alex has a sensible:greengrin car.

Mike doesn't drive so he's staying at mine the night before.

The only thing about car sharing is with it being a 6 am start where do we meet, then our last course is 12 miles away from the 1st course so nobody wants to be driving back and forward after 16 hours of golf :greengrin unless peeps stay in the same area/location it may cause problems.

As I said before, I'm willing to drive, and since I have a Vectra Estate, I can carry four people plus clubs.

I'll be leaving from Leith to go to the first course (Bathgate) so I could pick folk up on the way if required too.

In terms of getting folk home, as long as it doesn't take me too far off my route I can drop folk off later too (although I expect to be knacked by then!).

Let me know.

Cheers

P.S. not recieved my sponsor forms yet.

What I'll do over the next couple of weeks is send out a list of phone numbers to each member for each of the teams (I think:greengrin) then we can arrange it all between us.

What might be the simplist idea is if everyone that can drive just drives through to Bathgate and anyone that can't drive contacts someone from their team to request a lift.

What we can then possibly do (if need be) is work out who can leave their car in Bathgate and get a lift between the courses (rather than everyone driving), then at the end, the people from west lothian can take the others back over to collect their cars (or am I complicating things)

I'm pretty sure that that should work out

The teams are as follows:

Team Smith

Lawrence Stewart (houchy)
Scott McGrane (ScottM)
Alex Burnett (Greenlex)
Mike Eprile

This team is fine as all can drive apart from Mike who is sharing with me.

Team Turnbull

Tony Wright
Mark Whelan
Ronnie Young (h18sry)
Scott Learmonth (Hibbyscott)

This team is fine as all can drive apart from Mark who is sharing with Tony.

Team Reilly

Chris Strachan (godsahibby)
Colin Smith (cocopops)
Stuart Gilbert (sg7nil)
Douglas Burford

IIRC all in this team can drive so hopefully all can meet at Bathgate then work out who's driving who from there if need be rather than all 4 driving all day.

I'd personally rather not use a buggy on any round - it's pretty "against" the whole point of the day, as outlined by MacMillan's leaflet, which encourages you to hit x amount of shots and walk y distance in a day.

The toughest challenge in golf is back. Have you got what it takes to play 72 holes, hit 300 shots and walk 20 miles – all in one day? Recruit a team, pick a date and start fundraising.

I think the buggies would go a long way to "defeating that purpose" to to speak...

I have just read the rules folder that came with the sponsorship form's and it does not mention one way or the other whether buggies are allowed or not

EDIT found this on there site

Can we use golf buggies for the challenge?
We feel that in order to complete the ultimate challenge you shouldn't use golf buggies, we do however appreciate that this isn't always suitable if your course is exceptionally long

Which Dalmahoy is

HibbyScott
17-04-2009, 11:35 AM
Even if theres not anything in the rules about buggies...I wouldn't really want to use one.

Just reckon that if we're gonna do something like this, then we have to take the full physical blow it's gonna give out to us

Sylar
17-04-2009, 11:36 AM
I don't think it's against the rules per se, but it detracts from the effort being made in my eyes. Anyone can play 4 rounds of golf if they don't have to walk between the shots. Granted, we'd still be playing 3 rounds walking, but I'd feel as if I were cheating ever so slightly.

I don't want to be "the bad guy" in arguing against the buggies, as I would know exactly how tiring the day is (having done it last year), but that's par for the course with this event.

Yeah, it's the best 2 scores from each team which count as the cumulative score per round.

Well folks just had sme great news from the club. I've just come off the phone with Elaine Morrison and she is very keen on getting together for a meeting to discuss ways that we can take this forward.

She has proposed a meeting next Friday afternoon with a couple of us from here, herself and I believe Fyfe Hyland who is the commercial director. Seemed very interested in getting behind the cause and supporting us any way they can.

p.s. - Houchy - have you filled the void left by Greg Muir without the need for a variety of celebs joining us?

Scott, played with Greg today and he was genuinely disappointed that he can't play. He's actually a good bloke (for one that is "experiencing technical difficulties":greengrin) but yes, I have got someone else in so we're up to our 12 again.

That's awesome work Chris. To get the use of club facilities was great work but the fact they would like to meet next week sounds pretty positive. I'm in a meeting a 3 next friday for an hour or so but I'm more than happy to pop in earlier if the concensus is that I should go.

I'm more than happy to go in but I don't want to step on anyones toes here as I have had no involvement with the club thus far regarding the challenge and wouldn't have known where to start.

Regarding the use of buggies, if anyone does want to use them, then they can do but, personally, I'd prefer to walk the whole thing as I feel that's the way I'll get the most out of the experience. Although I'll maybe not feel that way on the 24th.:greengrin

Yeah, it's the best 2 scores from each team which count as the cumulative score per round.

We're going to need to get a collection of handicaps per player. If everyone could either post up or send me your handicap via PM, that would be great.

Back up to 6 now Scott.:bitchy::grr:

I'll be in Dundee next Friday, as per, but I'm more than happy to drive down and take part. Give me a good break from revising!

I don't think we'll need everyone to go along right enough, so if we can gather a small delegation, that'll be fine. Say maybe 4?

Could be at ER by 17:00(ish) if it helps.

P.S. My handicap was 22.5 before health problems meant I had to pass up my membership at Lothianburn.

I played the East Course (Championship) course at Dalmahoy today, and despite shooting a rediculously good 81 scratch (from the medal tees too!), I'm more tired tonight after one round, than I was at the end of last week, after playing 3 rounds and practicing 2 days!

The Championship course is a huge slog - my tiredness doesn't stem from the long walk - despite the walking distance, it's the shot type which will tire us all out. You're constantly hitting full-out fairway metals or low irons, and it really takes its toll. Only 4 par 3's as well!

Given the option, I'd recommend we play the West Course, even if Dalmahoy are kind enough to offer us the East - I know the East has more prestige, but it will literally bring one or two of us to our knees!

Either that, or maybe I'm warming to the idea of using buggies!!!

So we have 4 people for the meeting next Friday then. This sound OK?

I'll be driving from Dundee, so if we could get an idea of time ASAP, that would be great.

Is there any parking AT Easter Road? I usually park on London Road, but would like to be able to drive right up if possible, seeing as it won't be a match day!

Just got the following email from MacMillan:

Hi Lawrence,

Thank you for your query regarding the Longest Day Golf Challenge fundraising packs. We only send out one pack per team which gets sent to the team captain. However, if the other members of your team would like sponsorship forms etc they can either download these from our website (http://www.macmillan.org.uk/Get_Involved/Golf_events/Longest_Day_Golf/Downloads.aspx ) or I’m more than happy to post some extra forms out if they would prefer.

I’ve checked the registration forms we have and we have all the correct details so everything is fine with regards to that. However, I only received the registration form for Team Reilly on Wednesday so I’ll get the pack for this team sent out today so the captain of that team (Chris Strachan) should receive his team’s pack by Monday. If he hasn’t received anything by Wednesday then please do get in touch.

It’s fantastic to hear about the ambitious target your teams have collectively set and the great coverage you have got through newspapers. I’ve read some of the articles and what an amazing story! We are really pleased to have you and your friend’s on board for this year’s event. Here’s hoping we can make this year’s competition an even bigger and better success than ever before!

If you have any other questions or need help with anything else please feel free to give me a shout either via email or on 020 7840 4614.

Thank you again for your support!

Kind regards,

Kirsty

Seems the packs do only get sent out to the captains, although there was only 2 sheets in my pack so not really enough for a team of 4:confused:

Is everyone ok to print these forms off?

If anyone has any problems, drop me a PM and I'll give her a buzz and get them sent out.

Sorry about any confusion folks.

I just thought that as I had to register each persons address individually, everyone would get a sponsor pack.

Right folks, can we get a confirmation of names and best times for the meeting on Friday. I'd like to get back to the club today, I think it would be good if Houchy can come along, but you did say you had a meeting in the afternoon. I think four would be a good number of us.

Could you possibly explain that in the email Chris and ask if I'll be able to park in the visitor car park?

Scott - Does not want meeting to early
Houchy- Can you confirm if you've got a meeting , i think you said between 3 and 4?
HI8sry - You are working at 5 so meeting will have to be finised well before then.

I'm ok for getting away from my work for a meeting at any time in the afternoon it's just getting a time that suits everyone. Elaine was very keen to meet Houchy so I think it's important we schedule the meeting around him that may mean it doesnt suit everyone.

Just got confirmation, meeting is at 1.30, that is the earliest they can do. Are we asll still good for Friday?

Might be good to have a chat before the meeting to have a quick brainstorming of what we would be looking for, different sorts of fundraising evenings. Always best to go to these sort of things with as many ideas as possible.

That's fine for me mate and I'm hapy to meet up before hand whether it's before we go in or even one night this week somewhere (although Scott's probably up in Dundee so maybe not a viable option).

You're all welcome to pop up :greengrin

Still OK for Friday.

We can summarize some key issues here:

Firstly, we need to thank the club for all their help so far, and agreeing to meet with us to offer further support.

Uniforms? - subsidized or gratuitous.

Event hosting? - conference suite/behind the goals? What are our options? Sportsmans breakfast, racenight (including auction of prizes been donated)?

Bucket collection - last home game of the season?

I don't think we should ask the club for a donation per se - they've done a great deal to help us and we have the potential for additional help with this meeting, so i think it would be in our interests to NOT ask them for money.

Friday is cool for me

I have also been looking in to a sportsmans Breakfast, Frank Dougan is giving us the big hall in the club free of charge, I have spoken with caterers also and I have been given a great price, I have e-mailed a couple of people who host these things and speak at them to gauge there feelings, and to get an idea, of what they charge I am hopping for replies soon, and I will continue to do so, untill told otherwise :greengrin We need to agree a date for this but as the sponser money does not need to be in untill the 11th of September there is nothing stopping us having the Sportsmans Breakfast after the golf, depending on peoples holiday dates and Hibs fixtures:wink:

Thought I'd collate all the prizes/donations into one post, to see where we stand at the moment!

Signed Football - Rangers Football Club
Round of Golf - Fourball - Kingussie Golf Club
Signed Copy of R&A Rulebook - Muirfield Golf Club
Use of the Hibs Club for event - Frank Dougan
Signed Football Shirt - Hibernian Football Club
Place on the Website/E-Newsletter - Hibernian Football Club
Round of Golf - Fourball - Gifford Golf Club
Bottle of Smirnoff - Tom Miller (Rangers TV + Talk 107)
Round of Golf - Fourball - Bathgate Golf Club
Golf Lessons - 2x45 minutes - Houston Driving Range
Round of Golf - Fourball - Pumpherston Golf Club

Not to mention the rolls from Harburn which will help us along, the 5 FREE rounds of golf we are being offered (I include Turnhouse, even though they're no longer part of our itinerary) to help maximise our donations, the free publicity we've received from people interested in the story and not to forget, the £450 we've already received in donations from various people. Truly magic.

Few things from reading through the thread which seemed to fizzle away:

HibbyScott - you mentioned getting in touch with Bernhard Gallacher earlier - anything come of that?

Chris - fantastic work, putting the feelers out to all external parties, including other SPL clubs, SRU and other courses - you've gained so much in terms of prizes to auction off, and hopefully a few more will pull through for us as well.

All - from the prizes raise, to the publicity sought (and gained) to the donations raised and the dedication to getting even more sorted, we're doing a truly remarkable job. I tip my hat to you all. Keep up the outstanding work and we'll do a scary amount of work in raising funds for this very worthwhile cause!!!

Final thought (for a while, as I really should be revising, and this is providing a convenient excuse to skive):

I've been playing around with the idea of shirt concept for the day (as we'll need uniforms) and have come up with the following.

I'll be buggered if I know where to start with sourcing, but I'm hoping it's maybe an idea we can get Hibs to help us with:

Thoughts?
