My friend had the same thing on Monday. She has had to stop all of her cards. The woman in the bank said she had dealt with 5 cases that morning alone all from the Lizzie bryce. The bank twigged that she had been using her card here and someone in Australia tried to remove $500.

:agree: And someone had attempted to get $700 from my wife's account on Monday morning, again from Australia. We got a phonecall from RBS Fraud Unit and the account had disappeared from Digital Banking. Looks like they didn't get anything though but we've been told to check all the recent debits the crooks often try and get a small amount before going for the big hit :grr:

I stopped using my own card in petrol station atm's and paying for fuel a while ago and always use cash now unless they are they pay at pump Tesco versions.

 For the warning

My dad pays everything with his credit card then transfers money from his bank account regulary as he says he cant afford to lose the actual cash but the credit card companys can sort it out without much affecting him. His bank account was cleaned out a couple of years ago and although it was all paid back it took a week or so.

Subject: Shell garage still cloning cards.

Hello,
just to let you know my bank phoned over the weekend to say some kind soul tried to withdraw 2 lots of £1000 from my cash-card account in Australia last week.

Seems as though the SHELL GARAGE ACROSS THE ROAD IS STILL "AT IT !!!!" The bank warned me to stay away from SHELL CIRCLE stations in general as they are still
under Police investigation. Fortunately they didn't get any money but my card will take 7-10 days to be replaced, which is a total pain.

So you might like to pass the message on that ...

THE SHELL CIRCLE GARAGE is STILL NOT SAFE to use a card.... if you must go, use cash only.

You'd better be careful what you are saying, similair rumours were doing the rounds about Sainsbury's in Craigleith. The company were none too happy, as they were not true, and are taking legal action against the people making the allegations.

It was the Shell garage on Craigleith road.

I took out a loan last year and the money was paid into my account, over 3k, the next day I got a call from the RBS fraud unit saying someone tried to take funds from my account in Germany.

Thankfully I had taken all of the money out the same day the funds went in to buy a car:greengrin.

I must admit, I was impressed with the RBS fraud unit and their proactiveness (if that's a word!). Unlike my credit card company fraud unit who called me in the middle of the night because I had put a £10 top up on my phone.

My hubby had booked flights to Finland recently and a few minutes later was trying to book a hotel. When he put the C/C details in for the hotel it was declined. As he was trying it again the phone rung and it was his C/C company querying it and when he said it him trying to book it they said to try again and it all went through!! I was very impressed!

We had a transaction stopped on Sunday by the C/C company for some reason unknown to everybody. They phoned on Monday and asked us if it was for real and we said yes and they said to go ahead and do it again. It was for my sons X Box 360. :dunno: We have decided to use cash instead although it means a trip to the shops.

Hear what you're saying, just wouldn't want anybody to get into trouble. One thing is for sure, petrol stations seem to be places you have to be very careful with your card.

Since the story about the Craigleith garage a few months back I've never used credit cards at garages - especially so, the Lizzie Brice one. (my local)

I also told my wife never to use credit cards at that garage and when she told me last night of these rumours about the Lizzie Brice I reminded her not to use credit cards there, only to hear that had to use the credit card as she was out of petrol and had no money on her.

Lo and behold, her card was refused this morning down at Asda. A quick call to the bank and she was told that they had stopped her card as someone tried to withdraw - yes, you guessed it - £500 from australia!

Luckily we haven't been cleaned out.

So it wasn't the cashline machine?? My friend had used the machine and had used her card inside and we thought it was the cashline outside!

Glad it was caught before they got money but it is such a pain to sort out new cards etc especially at this time of year.

Dunno, I'll need to check with her. Best to stay away from all bits of it I reckon!

Good to hear you never lost anything. Although, you can now use this in any arguement that she accuses you of never listening to her.

I wished they could find those *******s who do this & string them up wi the baws !!! ...we had our account robbed a couple o years ago to the tune of £300..what really hurt though was my wife only found out when she went to pay for a wreath for her mothers funeral..heartbreaking enough without finding your account had been screwed too...:grr:

This wasnt a petrol station though like some o the stories above ...it was from an Abbey National machine in Morningside..the only place i ever used with my card & that was the one cloned/cleaned out ..

We contacted fraud at HBOS & they said my card had been used at Harverford Institute in London...a week after i had used it at Morningside..:grr:

Seems its all Shell garages that are having the problems.

For clarification:
Its Shell garages - Circle, Gorgie Rd and others
Its the card/pin terminals you pay with inside
It is not the cashlines that are being exploited
And importantly - cards/accounts are being used abroad that were actually cloned months ago. So even if you used your card at any of these garages in the last 6 months ask the bank to change your card.

Just asked my mate if his account was okay as he uses Lizzie B garage alot.

Turns out someone did try to get the money to Aus - but the tight bugger never had enough in his A/C so it was rejected.

And another......... the woman who takes my kids to the high school was there at the weekend and the machine kept saying 'remove card', eventually the employee said she would have to get it authorised but my pal went to the cashline instead. When she went back to the till she was told her card had been authorised and it was all fine. Yesterday her card was declined and a quick phone call to the bank proved that her card had been cloned and guess what?? $500 Australian dollars had been attempted to be removed twice!

By no means am I implicating the member of staff - she was probably as duped as everybody else.

I got a phone call from my credit card co about 4 weeks ago to ask if I tried to withdraw cash in Oz. I had been using it at Craigleith and Crewe Toll Shell stations. Since then Tesco petrol stations only with the credit card or cash elsewhere.

The credit card co stopped my new card a couple of times since then when interenet shopping and a big purchase, so hats of to them for being on the ball:thumbsup:

I've never paid any attention to this thread until today. My mum phoned her bank on Wednesday after being told by 2 different companies that her card wasn't being accepted so she thought there was something dodgy going on and wanted to find out what was wrong.

She phoned the bank and when she gave her card details, they said they were going to put her through to the fraud department.

When she spoke to them, she was told that someone had attempted to take out small amounts of cash in both Canada and Australia but neither transaction was completed. There was another one at the start of December, again sourced from Australia, this time it was for over £200. Fortunately the bank was on the ball and realised that this was an unusual transaction (my mum has never been to Australia or Canada in her life) and they blocked the request.

When she asked the woman about where this could possibly have happened, she said that although she could give no guarantees, there had been a spate of card frauds in Edinburgh Shell garages (the woman also mentioned another place but my mum can't remember where she said as she uses Shell garages in Edinburgh when we go to the football and once she mentioned that, she just shut off.)

Things to watch out for are any wee devices on either the chip and pin terminal, or on the ATM.

Check for people watching nearby and for any cameras pointing at the key pad.

Always shield your pin when entering it. It's also a good idea to make one or two 'false' key presses so that anyone who is watching gets confused or it's not clear what combination has been entered on the keypad for anyone viewing remotely.

If your transaction gets declined unexpectedly then check with your bank immediately. They will have a record of any transactions that have come through to them for a decision. Many of the devices don't actually send a transaction request to your bank, so if the bank don't know why it's not gone through then there is potential for fraud.

Report anything suspicious to the police, but don't tamper with anything or put yourself at risk by making it obvious that you know something's wrong. You could alert the fraudsters and these aren't people who'll apologise and be on their way...

Shopping with cards is safe so long as you take sensible precautions and are aware of who or what is watching. A huge number of card transactions are completed safely every day.

I was told by my neighbour on Friday whose daughter works in banking, not to use any ATM machine except those inside a bank premises. She did mention the garage across from St Johns and also ASDA's but I didn't really bother as I only use the one inside my Building Society branch or the one inside Ladywell PO

That's just scaremongering, the huge majority of ATMs are perfectly safe, and more so if you shield your PIN.

I work in banking and use other ATMs regularly and confidently.

Will it not be the case now though after all the problems that the Shell garage at the Lizzie Bryce roundabout will be the safest to use in the East of Scotland.
