A little while ago we had a thread about the Mexican restaurant on Cockburn Street (Viva Mexico?) Wonder if anyone has been there recently and can recommend it?

Any general suggestions for city centre or Leith restaurants (mid-range) would be great if anybody has a suggestion or two? Any cuisine considered.

Many thanks in advance.

Britannia Spice for Indian food, absolutely magic. Not been for a good while but never had a bad meal there.

Down near Ocean terminal.

Cant go far wrong with vittorias on Leith Walk either, good Italian food, broad choice.

Massimos on Antigua Street (Opposite Playhouse). Just opened. Food was fantastic and very reasonably priced.

Khublai Khan in Assembly Street is my favourite :agree:

It's a Mongolian restaurant, you get to make up your own dish and watch it being cooked, plus you can do it as many times as you wish

Your cricket Club went to the Guru a couple of times. Icky, who used to play, works there and I thinks its the bees knees and go there a lot.

Mention me, mention the club and you'll be well looked after.

I've been given the  by a few knowledgeable folks who're in the know about these things and Bigos on Leith Walk is worth a visit.

No website, but I found this:

If you like Italian then you can't go far wrong with La Favorita on Leith Walk. And for chinese Joanna's Kitchen on Dalmeny Street is a hidden gem.

I really don’t know what folk see in La Favorita. When I went the first time I cant say I was very impressed but after the continuous raves on here decided to give it another go, only to be let down again and then a third time.

I only have a simple pizza when I ‘do Italian’ and most other places seem to do it better with more attentive staff.

Joanna's Kitchen windows are currently hidden under about a foot of muck – its been shut for ages. I wanted to go there for my birthday in July and it was shut then! Haven’t seen it open since and it doesn’t look as though it will open again soon.

You're right though it was good, at least you have some taste

Would agree with that. Uninspiring if you ask me. Much prefer the two Vittorias although (I think) they're owned by the same family. I also find Favorita very noisy compared with the other two, doesn't make for a relaxing meal in my book.

Horses for courses though.

Not been to Viva Mexico, but Tex Mex II in Thistle Street was really nice! Wasn't all that expensive either!

I love Khushi's in Victoria Street as well, probably the best Indian food I've had and it's BYOB.

Thanks again all. Great suggestions.

Still yet to choose a place for Friday night but have a booking at the new Massimos opposite the Playhouse for Saturday.

Hear good reports of Tex Mex II unfortunately they can't can't accommodate us for tomorrow.

I like Tex Mex II, it's very small though!

Meant to say in my last post, I have been to Viva Mexico this year, and I thought it was fine. Not spectacular, but decent quality Mexican grub.

If you've got any veggies in your group and the meat eaters don't mind trying something a bit different, would recommend David Banns on St Mary's Street (more up-market) or Black Bo's (more 'rustic') which is off Niddry Street or thereabouts.

Spirit of Thai on Grindlay Street (opposite the Lyceum) is absolutely impeccable! Never once been disappointed by the food, service or price!

As close to Thai food as i've tasted in the UK!

Been twice recently to Loch Fynne down at Newhaven where Harry Ramsdens' used to be and it is excellent, obviously if you like seafood. Surprisingly reasonable price wise considiring the quality of the food.
