Scary indeed...
A few years back we flew there with Direct Holidays . The pilot came in to land and then just as the wheels touched the ground suddenly hit the throttle again and went back round to land again. My duaghter - who would have been about 4 at the time - asked at the top of her voice on a now quiet plane what was happening. I replied that the pilot was practising his landing to which she then asked how many times he was going to practise. "Hopefully, only the once!" was my reply, with fingers crossed. :greengrin Fortunately we got down safely at second attempt..

I was in Lanzarote in July and it does seem quite a tight landing area as the runway is literally on the beach
Kept looking out as we got closer to the water thinking whens the F*****g ground gonna show :brickwall
Taking off was just as bad cos it is so windy there the plane was getting blown about big style.
Can anyone tell I don't like flying :greengrin

Been into a few airports like that where you are convinced that land just isn't gonna appear before you touch down:greengrin

As a pilot who has flown into Lanzarote many times it has a lot of high ground around the approach end of the south-west runway which gives a high descent rate on final approach and can be tricky in bad weather. The approach to the other end is over water is fairly simple. Not the biggest runway in the world and not designed for wet conditions so may of been a factor!!

I dont know much about this incident but I would a guess a bit of pilot error and a bit of meterological conditions. Its very rare in Lanzarote to us runway 21, not very often the wind is westerly in that part of the world. Been there about 12 times and used runway 21 once. The runway maybe long enough but when you add wet runway conditions, steep descent rates, maybe a tailwand on landing and if the pilot landed long then that 8000` runway is now about half of that. Also a B737-800 has a very high approach speed. All could of added to going of the runway. ( If i could be bothered I would look up the runway lengths in ACE) :greengrin

Well whatever it was its put paid to any chances of us ever visiting lanzarote - not that we'll be going anywhere for a few years as my 13 year old had yet another panic attack on the plane coming back from France even with Valium so he wont be going through that ever again!

That is a shame because despite not thinking it would be up to much I really enjoyed my fortnight there - IMO it is perfect if you want a quiet family holiday. Plus a trip to fuerteventura is well worth it.
