I know Hiberlin is but he's not been online for a few weeks.
I need someting translated from English to send to some folk I met on holiday and I'm not going to insult them by using Babelfish or any other online program.
It's only about 130 words and I'd be very grateful if you could help.
Thanks
Dave

You should just give one of the online translators a go. Sure, it will F it up but after one pass I am sure you will be able to decipher the "Engerlish" is spits out. I usually use systransoft.com

So you're looking for the Americans to save the day again?
I'd offer to translate for you, but my German is not that good these days. If you want someone to read over the translation that someone else does, I'd be happy to do what I can.

Shame it's not French or Spanish!!
I do however know a couple of people that have a degree in German and I have several genuine Deutch friends and I can run it past them if you send me the text via PM.
Cheers
Peter

If anyone is fluent in German can they give me lessons. I'm off to Berlin on Monday and can't speak a word.
That's a lie actually, I can say 'bier'. Don't think I'll need much more than that.

I was in Berlin last November for several days by myself. There were several times when I was glad that I know some German. Not everyone there speaks good english. Speaking German helped me to blend in and not stick out as a tourist. Being able to turn down prostitutes and drug pushers without letting them know I was a foreigner was nice.
If no one in your group knows German, I would suggest either buying or making a sheet with some basic german phrases that you might need (like for the hotel, restaurants, transportation, numbers for knowing prices, etc...). Even being able to speak in broken German/English phrases can be helpful in some situtations.

Cheers mate. Bought a phrasebook today, frantically trying to find the section that tells me how to turn down prostitutes (the bird's coming with me...)

Was in Berlin for 4 days last September and was amazed at how good most peoples English was.
You can get by without knowing much German but really should try and learn a few basic phrases if poss. :blah:
