Not so much political correctness as student immaturity. Most of them grow up eventually to discover that the real world has more pressing concerns.

Apparantly, you can't use the term "political correctness gone MAD" as it's "disabilist" - at least according to the hippy bitch with the flourescent hair in the video. Sadly, there are mutants like her at every University in Scotland, who just look for fights and problems. No doubt she'll end up working as a consultant for some charity or rights organisation.

I'd be willing to bet she's a humanities or arts student! :duck:

No suprises that she's a raging feminist, who is interested in reclaiming the word ****** as a "positive term" and who feels that "all words describing women's genetilia should be positive" as "negative phrases" show societal prejudice against women.

Haha, some well-meaning if slightly foolish student is the main thing wrong with Britain and is evidence of the decline of Western civilisation? Are you Richard Littlejohn, by any chance?

In general 'political correctness' is just the combination of general good manners and not being a ******ing bigot.

When was that like?

That's not an example of PC gone mad, more drunk/stoned/bored hippy students gone slightly insane.

:agree:

It is the gentle art of realising that not everyone in the world is exactly the same, nor should they be.

I do think though, that this is a bit overboard. But I suspect like most "political correctness gone mad" propositions, common sense usually prevails or as in most cases, a middle ground is found.

I'd say there are a great many things wrong in Britain, but I think on the scale of things, this persons idea of gender neutral toilets is probably a long way down a very long list.

Iraq war, banking crisis, a media owned by a small number of people which controls the democratic process for the rest of us, massive borrowing and debt masquerading as economic success, xenophobia, superficial "celebrity" culture, large numbers of children living in poverty, culture of dependency on the state, massive wastes of public money on task forces and tsars, alcohol culture... that's just a few to go with.

As I say, well-meaning if a bit foolish. As blacksaltire says, not really much to get het up about in the wider scheme of things,

Whereas this comment displays British National civilisation at its highest and most open-minded and best, right?

As I say, well-meaning if a bit foolish. As blacksaltire says, not really much to get het up about in the wider scheme of things,

Agree entirely, LH.

If my recollection of my own Edinburgh University days is accurate, there were times when you needed hip-boots and a gas-mask before you entered the toilets at the old Men's Union (women weren't allowed in there in those days). So my sympathies here are with the women and the transexuals.

And when I think of some of the Neanderthals who hung around the place (they're still around if some of these posts are anything to go by) I'd say that anyone even borderline considering the faintest possibility of undergoing transgender therapy would have been well-advised to keep it to him/herself.

To avoid being beaten to a pulp by the Morlocks from the Science/Techie Departments.... Or dentistry.... Or the Dick Vet.... :agree:

But as you say, not all that important except to those directly affected - though perhaps very inportant to them.

Yes. The only thing more tiresome than this kind of nonsense is the reactionary bores who seem to get inordinately steamed up by it.

I know what I would like to say on issues like this but I would probably be accused of all sorts so I won't bother.

All I will say is, I don't know what's worse, the people who suggested this move in the first place or the people that agreed to it and it's just more proof that the world has gone mad (I know that's a bad word "disablist" apparently :faf: but i'm using it anyway).

And don't even get me started on the woman in the video with the green hair, I don't even think I could spend 10 seconds with her.

I'm all for cracking down on people/groups that deliberately discriminate/insult certain groups of people but these kinds of moves are just ridiculous.

You keep things the same, and transgender students have to go into toilets they don't feel comfortable in (and make other students uncomfortable probably).

You think you are being useful by changing them to "toilet" and "toilet with urinal" until it dawns on you that there is no difference, they're still essentially male and female toilets, so after all that the situation remains the same.

So all in all, an utterly pointless exercise by some students who probably mean well but in years to come will look back with a red face and see they were being over-opinionated idiots (such is a students wont).

:agree: Exactly. And that's all it is, and all it has ever been.

Students have always been the same, I know I was one. It's nothing to do with this "PC Brigade" (an entirely imaginary entity dreamt up by the Daily Mail) or "Do-Gooders".

People who get in a frenzy need to get a grip.

Oh I dunno. People like that are always good for a fun pointless argument. And laughing at.

And slagging the green hair isn't correct. Its a genuine disability, which causes hungover picking the wrong hair dye. How very unPC of you. I'll get the brigade onto you. They'll hunt you down, and make you one of them, through pointless nonsense arguments, wearing you away till you just agree.
Or perhaps she's a hibs fan?

Simply misplaced well-meaning-ness. Combined with a drunken bet.

That would be awesome, walking in with old "green head" having just walked in 2 minutes before and you clearly announce...

..."Ooohhh, this puppy's been in the departure lounge all morning and has finally decided she needs a swim".

See how quickly the toilets get changed back after a monday morning special.

The rather ironic thing is that women have probably had to fight quite hard to get their own toilets at universities, especially old ones.
And then this woman comes along and takes them away.

ITV has just shown something called Esther vs the PC Brigade.

It was slightly strange then, that the programme had absolutely nothing to do with political correctness - despite her unceasing protestations to the contrary.

I'm not sure if anyone has been to a National Union of Students conference, but you'd be amazed at how much time is spent by certain types of individual debating all kinds of crap not unlike this.

Any university seeking to stay out of NUS has my sympathy.

Speaking personally, MY University time was spent working very hard to pass all my exams....

....a very occasional night at the pictures....

....assisting my female fellow-students in a multiplicity of mutually-rewarding and mutually-gratifying ways....

....self-sacrificially touring the city's hostelries carrying out quality checks on the draught beer sold there....

.... and following Hibs.

I cannot remember the subject of non-gender-assigned toilets coming up once.

(Though I DO remember - vaguely - an evening when about twelve pints of Belhaven's best, three pickled eggs, a pork pie, two packets of cheese-and-onion crisps, a Marmite sandwich, a large helping of Chicken Tikka Masala and a bottle of Vimto came up rather suddenly halfway down Macdonald Road....)
