Ok peeps, now call me a div but my yesterday i topped up my oil in the car but forgot 2 put the cap back on n only today noticed it after driving 20 miles

Opened the bonnet to find the engine covered in oil so quickly cleaned up what i could n stuck the cap back on

I'm worried tho about the oil i couldn't get to & was thinking i shouldn't just leave it?

Anyone know where i could get the engine steam cleaned in the Fife area or round about Leith?

Pretty sure you can clean it with a jet wash if you're careful?
I'll ask my other half when he comes in - he's got a car valeting business.

I've seen people doing it at garages n always thought they were mental for doing it :greengrin

Let me know thanks

I did the same a few years ago mate, luckily the firm of accountants I worked for at the time had a garage client round the road and they steam cleaned it for me.

I actually ran the car for two days, including two trips to Stirling and back, before my boss noticed I had a leak, when I opened the bonnet that was when I found I hadn't replaced the cap.:boo hoo:

I would keep checking your oil levels every couple of weeks, my car was swallowing a litre of oil a month after my cock up and I am convinced my carelessness caused that problem.

You may be okay because 20 miles isn't too far compared to the distance I had driven without the cap on. I would still keep an eye on it though:wink:

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you.
Domestic bliss in our house as usual which resulted in an argument then no speaking for the rest of the night!! :dizzy:

Anyhoo, my hubby says if you watch what you are doing you should be ok, cover up the fuse box as you don't want water getting in to it.

If you're not sure, maybe best to get it steam cleaned.

Just make sure no water gets into the Spark plugs, Fuse's etc.

Why bother? :) Who cares how clean your engine looks?

Other than for appearance, I can think of only three reasons to steam clean your engine:
1. oil has got into somewhere it shouldn't have e.g., under your fan belt.
2. you don't want the excess oil to drip on your garage floor.
3. you don't like the idea of oil on your exhaust manifold (it will burn off anyway - smoky).

I've had the same thing happen to me years ago but I just wiped up what I could and that was it.
