Anyone like ice Hockey? :greengrin

Attended my first ice hockey match at last weekend - the Berlin Eisbären pumped the Ausberger Panthers 11-0(!).

I quite enjoyed the actual action, but there was far too much fannying about which made it drag a little. Also, the size of the puck means it will never really be a great spectator sport.

There's no way I'd watch it every week.

Yeah. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzbmI6-YSnQ) Terrible (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WK0aAR0Ppg) spectator (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBQArUjP89w) sport. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtomTdavWKw)

Here's a tip: the guy with his stick on the ice has the puck. It's not actually that hard to track where the puck is.

I love the game. Even though the Leafs are terrible.

But we're not as bad as the Bulgarian (http://mirtle.blogspot.com/2008/09/82-0.html) women's (http://mirtle.blogspot.com/2008/09/more-on-bulgarian-beatdown.html) team (http://mirtle.blogspot.com/2008/09/story-that-keeps-on-giving.html)

Where did I say it was a terrible spectator sport? :dunno:

Following the puck was no problem. The thing that bothered me was that when the play was around the goal at the other end (I was sitting behind one goal), the only way you could be certain they'd scored was when the fans at the other end jumped up. When the play was at my end you could see virtually everything (unless they were up against the boards :grr:). Maybe it's better if you're sitting along the, erm, touchline?

Main reason I wouldn't watch it every week, though, is that it just doesn't excite me the way footbal does. Pretty much like every other sport that's not football.

It's my favourite sport, even before football.

Been watching the game for almost thirty years on and off. I was down at the National Ice Centre in Nottingham this past Saturday night to watch the Nottingham Panthers take on the Sheffield Steelers. A great advert for the game with a sell-out 6,500 fans crambed in there and a tremendous atmosphere.

In a really entertaining game that swayed too and fro, the Panthers came out with a 5-4 victory. There was also a scrap just three seconds into the game too!

If you enjoy hockey, Nottingham is as good as any place to live in this country.

Ice and roller hockey pretty much dominate my household. My wee brother has been a youth netminder for around 7 years and always has the NHL on looking for tips on his goalkeeping, so its fair to say we've all gained quite a bit of knowledge on the sport. He's now playing for Kirkcaldy Chiefs and Chapel Roller Hockey Club at U14 and U16 level, and insists that his sole intention for the future is to earn a professional ice hockey contract. He's a New York Rangers fan with Henrik Lundqvist his favourite player so the requests to go back to New York just to see the hockey are never far away.

Even though the team's rubbixh, Leafs tickets are hot tickets and are likely to sell out (if they haven't done so already). You should be able to scalp a ticket, but it'll be expensive. Your best bet is try for a ticket to the Blues game on the 13th.

Or you could go see the Marlies - the Leafs minor league team - at the Ricoh Coliseum. That'll be cheap and easy to get to.

I don't have a clue about the rules...still and even had someone explain why the guy was allowed to handle the puck after I shouted for "Handball":grr:

As for that Hanson :grr::grr: That guy could easily referee a match against the Old Firm!!

Unfortunately Hanson refs most of our games and does rather like it to be the "Moray Hanson Show".

Some say in an effort not to show bias towards the Caps, that he goes too far the other way. Having said that he is still probably one of the best refs in the Elite league.

You are not allowed to handle the puck :Ummm: as such, more palm it ....I'm gonna let someone else explain that one..........

I don't know Moray personally but know many that do. They are probably the ones that shout at him the most during games :greengrin. On the whole he is not too bad with fairness but sometimes he has a bit of a wobbly. Obviously someone in the crowd has upset him on those occassions.

Think sometimes people are harder on him because he was so well thought of as a player.

I'd take him as a ref over most of the others any day.

Managed to get back from Aberdeen towards the end of the second period and the Caps were 3-1 down.

Have to say that I was very impressed with Nottingham in the 3rd, they look a very good side. The referee was a let down tonight as there looked a serious foul on a Caps player and he let it go:grr: Looking forward to Sunday nights game as the game was getting a bit niggley and there were a couple of smashed sticks lying around the ice, gloves off and helmets flying.

the only time you can handle a puck is when it's in the air, but you must drop it at your feet. If you catch it and try to pass it to one of your team mates, it will result in a face off.

He let several high stick calls go, when the 1st Caps player was injured he hadn't even called a penalty, he only did that when Daggie went off. I don't think the result would have been any different though.

This will not be a very popular opinion with the Caps fans but I think Christianson is playing like a man short at the moment and probably one of the worst players on the ice.

Having said that the Panthers were very impressive and are certainly the team to watch this year.

Missed last night's game as well as I too was travelling back down from 'Todders.

Unfortunately I think Doug has a lot of things on his mind which are happening off ice and it's affecting his ability on it right now. We all know he's a good player but the problems being encountered in trying to secure the services of players allied to the number of injuries we currently have are clearly for me weighing on his mind. I know we all say that those types of things shouldn't affect players when they cross the line ... but speak to any player in any sport off the record and they'll tell you that any off field problems undoubtedly DO have an affect on the on field performance.

I agree, he does not have it easy at the moment, but it is clearly affecting his game and he should maybe consider cutting down his own ice time. I know that we are struggling with a very short bench at the moment, but maybe if he sat back and directed the game from the bench for a bit, it might help. They were very disjointed last night. My comment probably sounded a bit harsh on him but I just meant he had a crap game on the night. Maybe he should accept more help from the bench coach during game (re lines, line changes etc) he is certainly qualified.

I am not disputing the very good job he is doing off the ice.

It was more entertaining than most SPL games, cheaper ($27) and there were 4 fights! And a Kings season ticket was advertised at only $411 which works out at about $11 per home game over the season, much better value!

Anyway really enjoyed it must think about going along to see edinburgh soon

I went to the NIC in Nottingham a couple of weeks back to see the Panthers v Sheffield game. It was a very good night's entertainment with Nottingham running out 5-4 victors on the night.

A great advertisement for UK hockey all in all. A capacity (and very loud) crowd of around 6500 watched a game that swayed too and fro over the three periods. I was in the exec bar before the game when someone came in and mentioned that there had been a scuffle in the warm-up! I only believed that story when just THREE seconds into the game two sets of gloves and helmets went to ice and real hockey scrap ensued. That set the tone for a pretty emotional and fast-skating game.

I hadn't been to the Panthers for some time but I'll be back.

In Kelowna, BC Canada at the moment and Kelowna is a real hockey town. The Kelowna Rockets are an excellent junior outfit (four players drafted to the NHL last season). Although most of the team are only up to 17 years they're tough, skillful and most of all incredibly fast. Watching UK hockey after viewing these kids is a bit like watching hockey in Slo-mo! They managed a 6-3 win on the road aga9inst Lethbridge Broncos in Alberta last night. I'll be going to watch them the coming Saturday versus Prince George in front of the usual sell-out 6-7000.

Just finished watching the re-run of the Bruins vs Canadiens game from last night.

Canadiens eventually winning 4-3 after a shootout decider!

Been some great games on NASN so far this season - watched the Philidelphia vs Pittsburgh game the other night, with Pittsburgh stealing the game with seconds remaining in overtime.

After being introduced to hockey last year whilst visiting the states (my friend, who stays in Ohio, is a Redwings fan and took me to the first Stanley Cup final game vs Pittsburgh), I follow the Redwings properly (first full season) - been an indifferent start, after losing the opener against the Leafs, but we seem to have a nice rythym going again.

The Flames are notoriously slow starters Cameron. Over the last 5 or so years they have been poisonous in October and through to mid November. They then tend to put together a 9 or 10 game unbeaten streak which gets them right back up there. I'm more confident this season that when the new boys gel, the Flames may at last get beyond Rd1 of the play-offs for the first time since we were robbed of Lord Stanley's trophy in 2004!
They look good up front but as you say they need to get the back door shut a wee bit tighter. That'll come though.

I saw the Flames three times on Zitelli over the past couple of weeks over there, PC. They look a much tougher outfit than before and follow through on their checks readily. The Flames shipped six goals an improving Vancouver in two games though then threw away the third game at The Saddledome when they were leading. They didn't play very smart in those games and were outpassed by the Canucks but it's early days yet. Kipper's rep seems to be falling a bit from everything I read. A good goalie though in my book.

Not a great fan of Coach Keenan and his style and I know a lot of players in the NHL hate him. He might be the thing for Calgary, not sure.

As someone who only started going to hockey games at the tail end of last season, does the American league seem faster and tougher than our Elite league?

I also don't have a N American side to follow, any suggestions or should I just pick a name out of the hat and go with them

We always have provblems with the Canucks whether they are improving or not! That said in the season opener at GM place, the Flames outshot them however Kipper had a 'mare and Luongo as ever stopped everything hit at him. Kipper had a few issues last term as well and was hooked on a couple of occasions in the play offs when Cujo came in and did a sterling job. However over the piece, he does have many more good games than bad. Trouble is that when he has a bad 'un he usually has a stinker a la GM Place. Wasn't helped too much there by his defence mind and missing Robyn Regehr in that game didn't help the Flames.

As you say Stu, early days yet and a lot of slow starters will likely improve whilst some of those quick out of the blocks may regress. Another interesting season ahead.

You know mate, I watched that game and noting that the Canucks were outshot (which was pretty weird in itself for such a wide scoreline, I didn't think Kiprusov played that badly and nor did the commentators. A lot of it he had no help with at all from his defence. Others were unnavoidable rebounds and stuff. I think he'll come back strongly when the side settle a little.

Like the look of Luongo though. They reckon over there he's number one at the moment and I can see why. Very calm and cool-headed. His positioning iis spot-on too, very impressive.

There's been quite a bit of hot air about him being made 'captain' (the first goalie to do so in fifty years.. Not allowed to wear the 'C' on his jersey they painted one on the loweer part of his mask and offered that it could stand for anything - Canucks for instance! He's not allowed to talk to the officials so I don't really see the point, good influence that he is.

Aye the Canadians certainly don't have a problem with netminders that's for sure. Brodeur, Luongo & Turco make a fearsome threesome!

The "C" issue is just daft for me. If there's no official rule that says a goalie can't be Captain then why are they being so obstinate about it?

The official line is that they're concerned about teams using delaying tactics with the goalies discussing with refs and obtaining unofficial time-outs that benefit their team.

Last goalie to do it apparently was Montreal goalie, Bill Durnan in the fifties.

:
With all due respect to the lads who play in the Elite League who are worthy enough, there really is no comparison Billy. Not only are NHL players way more skilful and quicker, they're also very big these days. 6ft 2ins and 200lbs is round about the NHL league average these days. They're getting bigger and faster all the time.

It's like a different game watching the NHL.

school hols so the kids don't need to be in bed by 8pm!

The games between Edinburgh & Basingstoke this season have all been good games with goals .. and an added attraction is that the game is being covered by Sky TV for transmission on their Elite Hockey show.

Now compared to football stadia Murrayfield Ice Rink is very compact and there's a good chance you'll spot yourself on the box!

I love Ice Hockey me, played it for years. I go to the Caps games now and again but haven't been as vigulant this season. Will start going again in the New Year though. Still go for a skate now and again and it still amazes me how the ice rink has not changed in 20+ years. When the Racers were the team to beat, the crowds were healthy but it seems none of the cash generated went into the venue.

I was in New York in 2007 and wanted to go and see a Rangers game. They played the Islanders at the Garden the night before I got there then played them the night after I left at the same venue. I looked at the fixture schedule and the only five day break in the season at Madison Square was the days I was in New York. I was distraught. I'll catch a game next time though.

Get a PS3 just for NHL 09, it's absolutely amazing. It looks so real and plays brilliantly

Try 50 + years :greengrin. Also the team and the rink are separate entities, so the money probably wouldn't go into the venue.

I went to the NIC for the Nottingham Panthers v Cardiff Devils fixture last week. What a strange team the Panthers are - some of their plays can be breathtaking occasionally - usually followed by basic elementary errors like taking their eye off the puck and letting it bounce over their stick, misplacing simple straightforward passes when they have time on the puck.

They deserved their win in the end on a penalty shoot out in which former goalie, Cap, Michele Robinson acquitted himself well.

The next night the Panthers beat Coventry 4 - 0 on the road. What a Jeckyll and Hyde outfit!

Off to Canada tomorrow where I hope to pull in a couple QMJHL games seeing these boys:

The Pirates are probably the worst team in Scotland right now and our Elite Brits and two of our Elite imports manage to hand them a 2-1 thrashing!

Much the same .. a decent result for Hibs, a Flames win and the Edinburgh Capitals held Newcastle to a slender 5-4 loss in the Elite Knockout Cup 1st leg in Newcastle. Second leg at Murrayfield tomorrow and plenty optimism that the Caps can overturn the single goal deficit and progress to the semi finals for the 2nd year running.

Overall i thought the flames played quite well but that slack few minutes cost them dearly in the end.

The Hawks are a good team. Could do some damage in the next couple of years while Kane and Toews are still on their entry contracts. Their two best players are two of their cheapest. Gives them plenty space for manoevre. They could make a run at UFA-to-be Marian Hossa, for instance. Trade for Heatley, maybe. They're a bit like Washington were the past couple of years.

Just note the Flames are marching up the table were now 6th overall, with games against Nashville, Chicago home to San Jose and NY Islanders comng up.
I'm hoping for a split 2 wins 2 loses.

Looking for 75% now Ken!

We seem to have overcome our previous problems against the Preds. We can't beat the Hawks at all right now so I expected a loss there and got it! (though it was closer than the scoreline suggests)

However we then hand a fair whipping out to the Sharks who I consider to be the best in the league right now (even if they always choke on the big occasions!)

So ... we should be capable of taking the Islanders at home but then again that's just the sort of game we come unstuck in being the Hibs of ice hockey!

With 2 regulation wins in our last 17, we are due a win:thumbsup: Doug Weight has reached his 1,000th point mark, so he has gotten that off his back and can get back to playing.

That they pulled it back to 2-2 was an achievement in itself having been absolutely bombarded with Joey MacDonald in the Isles net being outstanding. Some of the saves he pulled off in the 2nd period were incredible and he almost deserved the help he got from the metalwork as well! If he actually were to get some protection from his defence the Isles might progress a little.

Have to say I didn't ever really feel the Flames were in danger. Their speed and strength along with their puck movement and the number of shots they were getting meant that either the Isles were either going to have to get very lucky or something was eventually going to give.

5-2 was a fairer reflection of the play and maybe even flattered the Isles a little at the end.

IIRC the Oilers v Habs game was played in 2003 in Edmonton to celebrate the Oilers 25th season in the NHL?

The (now likely to be) annual NHL Winter Classic with the massive NHL promotion to go with it however has been the last two years.

You can go back even further though for an outdoor game when the Rangers played the LA Kings outdoors in an exhibition game at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas way back in the early 90's.

Think next year's most likely Alex Ovechkin versus Boston or the Rangers.

Yeah i watch NASN which i get with my setanta package. Live game every night, sometimes you get two matches at the weekend. Highlights on most of the next day as well, which is great for me if the flames are at home. Only fault imo is it tends to show the same 4 or 5 teams so have you have to hope that your team is playing one of them in order to see them on tv

Magnus Hedman's the ISS #1 ranked prospect. Has been for a while. I'm reliably informed that Cowan's a beast and Paarjavi had a very good WJC too. Dunno anything about Duchene.

The worst ranked team only has a 40% chance of winning the lottery anyway, but is guaranteed a top 3 pick.

Well i think this probally won't happen, he now been mentioned for winning coach of the year!

Mike has done a great job gettin each player to play a role and so far its working fine.
I personally think the flames are one or two players away from been a contender for the next two-three years.
I'm very concerned aboot Dion his defence of play is very slack and is on the ice for alot goal against. he is sittin on minus 7 but he needs a steady guy as a partner. Gio (no.5) and Pardy (no.55) have been his partners it really has not worked. Florida's defensemen Jay Bowemeester <sp?> would be the rite fit.
Over all so far i'm surprised how this team is playing , but the playoffs are a whole new kettle of fish, last nite we struggled against Phoenix never really got going, this worries me.

I hear different (http://www.tsn.ca/columnists/darren_dreger/?id=263297&lid=sublink02&lpos=headlines_nhl)

The 2009 draft is regarded as pretty deep by most commentators. If the Islanders get #1 it might be worth their while trading out and still get a gold prospect in Hedman, Cowan or Paarjavi and another 1st rounder in the 8-12 range.

There's no guarantee the Fishsticks will even get #1 since the lottery isn't close to a sure thing and they might not even finish dead last. There's a lot of potential for teams like Tampa, Ottawa and Toronto to get a lot worse.

As has been said, every team will have a slump at some point and the key is making sure it's a short one and not a long one. Flames get back on track with a 6-2 victory last night over the Habs at the 'Dome. Both teams went in to the game on a downer but the Flames will take a boost from that result whilst the Habs now have it all to do on their road trip through Western Canada with a visit to the Oilers next up.

That victory gives the Flames a 7-0-1 record against Eastern Conference teams at the Saddledome this season so far, which is pretty darn impressive.

I sat up and watched this match last night depite being shattered. I really really enjoyed the game, obviously winning 6-2 had part to do with it but over all i just thought it was a really entertaining 60 minutes. Two excellent short handed goals, great saves by Kipper at 3-2 and the Habs tender when they were 2-1 up. Everytime the ref blew the whistle a scuffle seemed to break out with Bourque in the midst of it early on.

Cracking atmosphere aswell. Although it was at the dome the large habs contingent added to the bite that was on evident on the ice

I don't think that it'll be easy for Calgary to offer Camalleri the kind of deal he'll be looking for. It'll probably be easy for another team to outbid them. And since he's having a career year, his agent would be crazy to sign a deal now instead of waiting for him to hit free agency.

Nice start with a 6-3 win in Ottawa.
The Flyers may be a slightly tougher proposition Thursday though.

Edit Thursday post game ..... 2 debut goals for Olli Jokinen and another for Jordan Leopold as the Flames win 5-1 in Philly. Blew the Flyers away 1st period 4-0.

What a game just finished between the Flames & the Redwings at the Joe Louis. Flames 4-2 down with just over 3 mins left score 3 goals in 2 and a bit minutes to lead 5-4 with around a minute and a half left. Redwings then pull their netminder and equalise with 30 secs left. 5-5 and into overtime. Both teams have OT chances but game goes to a shootout. Redwings score their first as do Flames. Redwings then miss their second as do Flames. Redwings miss their third and step forward 2 goals in normal time Oli Jokinen to win the game for Calgary. So far Jokinen has been everything you'd want from a sniper and more.

I don't think I have ever seen as big a homer of a ref in the first period as I did in tonight's game. Flames spent almost 5 successive minutes facing 5 on 3 taking some of the softest penalties going but managed to get out only 2-1 down. Huge win after winning 2 and then losing 3 of the first 5 road games. The all Canadian clash on Saturday against the Leafs will hopefully provide a good end to the trip.

Great result for the Leafs. Any kind of win for the Leafs is a great result right now, even more so against one of the leading teams. A minor setback for the Flames at the end of a long, tough road trip with a knackered goalie who had performed like a superhero against Detroit. That if anything will be what kills the Flames, the lack of reliable back up for Kiprusoff. I was surprised McElhinney didn't start against the Leafs. Then again, with his record we'd have probably still lost.

However come the postseason, the "pumped" Flames will be in there having another crack at Lord Stanley's trophy whilst the Leafs can read about it in The Star.

I'm actually unconvinced it's a good result since it hurts our draft position - especially with all the other bad teams winning last night, too. Still funny, though.

There are a bunch of teams that are going to be in deep trouble soon. If not next year, then the year after when the cap contracts. The Leafs have space and they have deep pockets. In a couple of years teams are going to be dumping contracts left, right and centre. With a bit of patience, we'll be set.

That's one of the reasons Daryll Sutter felt happy to trade away the Flames draft for Jokinen. The feeling is that there will be a dozen or so previously drafted players at farm clubs better than what they'd expect to have gained at this year's draft. Those players of course will come through on lesser monetary deals when veterans such as Conroy, Warrener, Langkow etc will likely be offloaded. The Flames have a decent track record in recent years of introducing drafted players who have come through the system. Giordano, Moss, Pardy, Peters recently, Phaneuf (though he has gone on to a big salary deal now), McElhinney to name but some who have cemented a place. Others have come in and played a few games and gone back to farm meantime but are clearly highly thought of.

All in all I'm pretty happy with the way the Flames are set at present.

Cant wait until hockey season over for the flames,
the city is not excited aboot the playoff it look like chicago, so out in four. Flames lost all four games to Chicago oot scored 3-1 in total goals and theflames are too slow for young chicago skating team.

Flames were 13 pts ahead of Vancouver and now are behind them and chicago and Columbus are only four behind, fallin like rock here,:grr:

Flames will never win anything with Sutter running the team he loves fourth line players ans he' HAS NOT. CHANGE TO THE NEW NHL,

What has happened to the Oilers over the last few games Calgary?, thought they were going to comfortably slot in 6th or 7th but have slumped last 10 games or so. I see they have Flames home/away last 2 games, any chance your boys can lie down and let them slip in the back door !!!!!

What was the stuff about the coach accusing the opposing player having an illegal stick...... What are the penalties for that, i see the Oilers copped a 2 minute penalty for being wrong.

It's a two minute minor penalty for using an illegal stick, bud. If the opposing side's accusation is incorrect it's two minutes for them.

Canucks vs St Louis has just started on ESPN - Vancouver lead 2-0 - can't see me staying awake for it all though.

My beloved Redwings are making significant strides towards retaining the cup so far, leading the Bluejackets 2-0  We look even better than last year with Lidstrom, Cleary, Hossa and Zetterberg on fire just now. It helps to have Chris Osgood between the posts right enough, as he's also playing some solid hockey at the moment.

Hope the Flyers can come from 2-1 down to dump the Penguins, but can't see it :boo hoo:

And then lose game 2 3-2 after being 2-0 up at the end of the 1st.

Still they finally scored a powerplay goal. First in 46 attempts yet PP coach Rich Preston still remains on the coaching staff. I'm not sure I agree with Ken re Sutter. I'm not sure that Mike Keenan has been getting his ideas across to the players lately. They just seem to be doing their own thing too often.

That said, they have deffo played better against Chicago than they did in the regular season games and the "C of Red" has a big part to play now. It's vital that they win both the home games coming up as they will be out of it if they have to go back to Chicago 3-1 down IMHO.

4-2 Flames in game 3. Better. They solved Khabibulin last night at last! A similar result needed though in game 4 tomorrow. That could just see a momentum shift. The Flames were a bit unlucky in both games so far in Chicago and would still have a decent chance of a victory there in game 5. Whilst Chicago are undoubtedly a good young side, they collectively have little or no play off experience whilst the Flames have a good bit. That could count for a lot if it goes 2-2. Anyways at least from Calgary's viewpoint the series is still very much alive as of today!

As you said Cliff, a much better showing the other night but if we lose tonight i cant see them coming back. As you pointed out though a win tonight and their inexperience may start to tell.

Hopefully Cammy, Iginla, Landkow or Bertuzzi can step it up. All have been quiet so far this series

Jeez the Flames are so the Hibs of Ice Hockey! If there's a hard way to do it they'll find it! 6-4 win after leading 4-1 in the 2nd and then being pegged back to 4-4.
2-2 in the series and all to play for again and with Jokinen and Iginla both scoring twice it could be that they are starting to wake up. However with the Flames they could as easily fall asleep again Saturday in Chicago. That's now the pivotal game in the series for me. Flames must win this one on the road or it's a likely repeat of last season's match up against the Sharks ... lose the series in game 7!

They screwed it by not winning the divison Cam. Chicago are a tough team to play against at any time but even more so when missing several key players, having others playing on through injury and giving up home ice advantage. No disrespect to St Louis but they would have been a better option to give the Flames a greater chance with home ice advantage. Even if they win game 6 tomorrow, I just can't see them being able to win in Chicago. The same old road woes coming back to haunt them yet again.

NHL Draft tonight!

My predictions

Think it's gonna be Duchene on Long Island. Tavares would be my choice but this is the New York Islanders and I've long learned not to expect the conventional.
Hedman to Tampa - they'd be crazy not to pick him..
Leafs will unsuccesfully try to trade away every asset they have to Colorado for that 3rd pick and Tavares.

Hope I'm wrong and JT joins the Isles.
