Seriously though, did the prices go up straight away or was there a delay? They should go down slowly I'd imagine.

but when petrol in real terms was much cheaper say 5-10 years ago, was there too many cars on the road then?

i dont know what the exact figures are, but the reason i'm annoyed is that in brittain we pay around half of our petrol price in tax, which compared to rates in other countries is quite ridiculous

Of course everything has increased. Its called inflation. Mortgage rates are a lot better than 15 years ago. House prices have got out of hand but that only really effects younger people like myself as older homeowners would have gained from the rises somewhat offsetting the cost of moving in comparison with a first time buyer.

VAT campaigning
Fuel campaigners argue that VAT should only be calculated on the cost of the fuel rather than on the fuel and the duty together.
If VAT was not charged on the duty, the motorist would save around 8p per litre at September 2000 prices. None of the parties appear to support that move.
Leaving aside VAT, fuel duty increases under Labour amount to 12 pence per litre - just slightly more than the rise caused by the escalator under the Conservatives.
Because of the rise in world oil prices, the proportion of the total fuel cost that is tax has fallen from 85% (March 1998) to 72.3% today - still one of the highest levels in the world - something that ministers have sought to stress in interviews. With the Tories pledging a three pence a litre cut should they come to power, the question is whether the Government should cut fuel duty - and whether the country can afford it.

I was told a few weeks ago that oil is bought well in advance by petrol companies so the prices we are paying just now are probably based on a much higher oil price.

I expect/hope that due to the recent oil price slump that in a month or two we should see a more reasonable price at the pumps. My local Tesco dropped their unleaded price by 3p today.

col02
11-10-2008, 09:01 AM
I think i read that petrol companies are looking to change their approach to price increases by basically holding back any increase for a three month period say and then passing the rise on to the customer at the pumps. I would assume this works pretty much the same way for selling fuel too. It is maybe to give them a more structured set up rather than fluctuation of the markets of a few months ago. :dunno:

My own personal opinion about the current credit cruch/recession we are in is that OPEC are more to blame than they have had attributed to them so far for soaring prices in pretty much every walk of life like grocery shopping thru to any company that relies upon fuel for providing a service.

No-one has really mentioned that although petrol prices are still quite high we are lucky enough that one of the cheapest prices in the UK is in Edinburgh!
I was on www.petrolprices.co.uk and noticed the cheapest (thursday prices) is 103.9 and some stations in Edinburgh is selling at that, the dearest is 119.9.
Tesco Corstorphine yesterday was 102.9 so hopefully it stays the same way and we keep getting the cheapest petrol in the UK.

I think what he said was that with the reduction in VAT, any effect that had on fuel prices would be countered by a raise in duty, so I doubt fuel will increase by that much as they should cancel each other out.

Article in the Guardian said that the RAC expect fuel prices to drop by 7p a litre before Xmas.

And as I said above the price of oil is set to go to down to nearer $40 a barrel by the summer so we should see some big decreases. Most of our price is duty though so may not be that big a drop for us!

Markets don't seem to agree with this but the chief ecomonists of both shell and bp expect that to be the price.

I was told a while back that the fuel companies buy their oil 2 or 3 months in advance. On the basis the prices we are paying now will be based on a price per barrel of around say $80-$90 approx. So what the RAC are saying makes sense and that we should see reduced prices by Christmas, based on the fact oil is hovering round the $50 per barrel mark just now.

I don't know what to believe though. Back in July during the peak oil price we were being told to expect this as the norm and that we could be paying £1.50 per litre at the pumps by September. That turned out to be bollocks. I just hope what you say turns out to be true:greengrin

i dont know what the exact figures are, but the reason i'm annoyed is that in brittain we pay around half of our petrol price in tax, which compared to rates in other countries is quite ridiculous

I read the figure is 74%.

It's 52.35p a litre in tax before you take into consideration anything else (productions, garage margins etc etc).

The government have reduced VAT temporarily to 15% for 13 months but slapped on a 2p tax per litre (to take it to the above). When the VAT returns to 17.5% (or higher) then the 2p is staying in place.

Do people genuinely use their car more when petrol is cheaper? Do you think to yourself 'ah fk it, I'm going to go out and waste some petrol'!!! I use my car the same amount regardless. When it's cheaper it just means I don't fill up as much.

it's finally "down" to about $1.90 up here but it's only a few years ago that I was saying that $1.70 was expensive. I think they play with the prices so much that you forget how cheap it really used to be.

My local Shell is down to 88.9 too.

I filled my car right up yesterday and it cost £45. The same amount of fuel during the peak prices in July/August would have cost just short of £60.

I put an average of 120 litres in my car a month, so I am saving around about £36 a month.

It can if OPEC wants it to.

Not any more...OPEC used to be able to control the price and while the still obviously have influence the scale of the global market for oil means demand has a much greater influence than OPEC's not entirely effectived control of supply.

Who knows where the price of oil is going or will stay....all commentators in this field, including OPEC themselves, have proven to be completely wrong a number of times in the last year or so.

Consensus seems to see it sitting at the current price only reasonably briefly with it heading north again at any sniff of an upturn....however no one can see an upturn anytime soon so we might have cheap oil for a wee while yet.

Tescos dropping their petrol prices by 3p to 82.9p per litre as of today. Diesel to fall somewhere between 94.9p and 97.9p per litre depending on filling station. Other outlets will likely follow suit.
