Does anybody on .net study here? If so, what do you think of the place?
Im hoping to go next year to study accounting.
Was at the open day last friday, but only seen pollock halls and although i was impressed i have a feeling that they are catered only accommodations. Does anybody know whether you can go self-catered to pollock halls or if there is another place for students who want to go self-catered which is as nice/nicer.
Thanks,

I was quite disappointed by the open day. The European Languages talk was for numpties, and while the Politics talk was great, the guy only got halfway through due to time constraints. Don't really think they did anything to sell Edinburgh to me, not I suppose that they need to.
I want to go to Glasgow anyway.

You do know that you need a minimum of 4 Bs in any subject to even get into to Edinburgh Uni.

Id watch out because i think edinburgh is usually oversubscribed so BBBB might not be all that accurate. :agree:

My mate went to hear the history lecture and was told that the lowest grades accepted for this year was AAAA!!
So I would just really go full throttle and achieve the best grades that you possibly can. That may sound quite obvious but I think sometimes when people know that they need slightly lower entry requirements than usual then they just sort of ease off a bit.

Pollock Halls is all catered but there are plenty non catered flats owned by edinburgh uni. Just look on accommodation site.

Thanks man.
Shame, i quite liked the look of pollock both in terms of the room and the location. Atleast there should be better kitchen facilities at the self-catered ones (e.g. an oven).

Admission rates are very low, 10% in some subjects, about a quarter on average. Very rarely will BBBB or ABBC be enough!

Good call, Glasgow is a great place to study. Glasgow Uni is the Scottish University of the year, and is a leading centre of world renowned research. Glasgow has 2 great unions, one of the best/largest uni libraries in europe and the campus itself is gorgeous.
The social scene in Glasgow is also excellent, lots of cool pubs, great live music etc etc. Would recommend it to anyone:agree:

Also the fact that you don't have to sell organs on the black market to finance a big night out, the taxis are LITERALLY half the price, Edinburgh Uni itself is Crammed full of - as mentioned above - "ya's" who haven't done a hard day's work in their puff.
Oh, and did I mention the Party Train??

Edinburgh the city is also a good place to study but its more expensive than the weedge and less "live music" however id rather walk the streets of edinburgh at 3 in the morning than glasgow.
Edinburgh university is about 80% full of people who have mummy and daddy paying for everything and look down their nose at anyone who isnt the same.

If you want to stay in Edinburgh to do accounting then go to Heriot Watt. The atmosphere is great and I've done a couple of the accounting modules. They're not too bad, Paul Gordon makes it worthwhile :greengrin
I'd strongly advise staying in halls as well. If you decide to go to Heriot Watt then I'd advise the catered halls.
At the end of the day it's up to you but I wouldn't go to Edinburgh. They kinda have the "big team" attitude that Hearts have :greengrin and a lot of them are up themselves. Obviously not everyone.
As for Edinburgh being expensive, you can find a cheap night out every night.

I was frustrated by Edinburgh as i didn't get into my chosen course - Law, with 3As 2Bs, not even a conditional offer.
Yet i know of others from different schools who got in with grades such as 1B and 2Cs for the exact same course.

It depends how good your school is. I know a girl(from another school) that never even got a conditional with 4 A's and a B and some experience but a guy from my school(a grade 1 heap) got fairly easy conditions with less than that.
You have to take your personal statement into consideration too

Yeh i had 2 really good work experience's for law as well. I know others like your friends that had brilliant experiences, 4As 1B yet got rejected.
I'm not too bothered by it now, i'm off to Aberdeen, which is better for law according to some ratings.

Just realised that my previous post was kind of irrelevant. They both applied for medicine not law. Another girl from my school went to Edinburgh to do law though. Last time I spoke to her she hated it.
Aberdeen is meant to be a good laugh anyway. Good luck

I'm going to avoid the anti-Edinburgh sentiment on this board as I feel a lot of it is warrantless.
For the guy that asked about catered/ self-catered, I went with a self-catered flat. The food at Pollock is not known to be that good and you should learn to cook for yourself. You'll save money cooking for yourself too.

There's some stuck up tosspots go there, but that's the same for any uni and all you do is avoid them. There were loads of us from normal scottish state school backgrounds, and we had a whale of a time - and remember Edinburgh is still the best city in the world

I didn't spend four years there, but I was there more recently. I agree with your comments exactly. None of my friends could be called a "ya". You'll run into them during lectures at anyplace, but you don't have to spend with them. You spend most of your time outside of lectures and tutorials anyway.
Edit: I just realized that in my past four or five posts I've given away almost every school or uni I've gone to since I was 14.
