Know the feeling, They just went up 15% a couple months ago too.

I pay by direct debit and am currantley paying £44 a month for Gas and £37 for electricity.. But dont use that much in Summer, But worried that i am going to get shafted for a massive bill at the end of the year as i might well use more than im paying during the Winter with these prices.

Wont be long at all before the other companies follow though.

British Gas stated that they were making a loss from suppling the stuff cheap.
Dont beleive that for a second though.

Pretty sure the Gas companies buy quite a bit in advance.
So the stuff we are using now is the stuff they paid for at about a year ago when prices where fine!

It is actually most likely to be true, you'd be surprised. Apart from last year, British Gas Residential (i.e. the domestic arm) were making huge losses. However, because Centrica (the parent company that owns many other companies) posted a profit, the media reports that as 'British Gas makes a profit' when it is simply not true.

They do pay in advance, but not as much as a year ahead. The predictions are that the prices will rocket so they have to put up the price. In general though, the prices are crazy compared to what they used to be.

Sign up for a price freeze offer now if you can would be my advice :agree:

I've just moved into rented accomodation. Bills are'nt inclusive, so God knows how much I can look to adding onto the basic rent this winter with fuel hikes.

Whilst the days of 'cheap' energy (if they every truly existed), are gone, I can't really see the financial pinch particularly crippling the suppliers that hard. From my previous electric bill alone they must be making a small fortune.

First post. Hi all. :)

Somewhat off topic, but caught a headline in the Daily Mail this afternoon demanding a 25p cull on Petrol in response to profits from BP. That'd make life easier, though can't see petrol being less than £1 for a long, long time (if ever again, in terms of conventional Petroleum at least).

Anyone here converted their car/know anything about LPG? Fuel costs look attractive, though the cost of converting your car is mega apparently (think it'd cost more than my Saxo's worth now!)

Betty - Cheers! :)

Your talking a couple of grand last time i looked, there was a time that the goverment was willing to go halfers with you to get it done but they pulled the plug :grr:

Well worth thinking about if u can afford the convert but if it took off i've sure the goverment would start increasing the prices :agree:

As stated though, gas and electricity are paid for in advance. If the wholesale prices drop, customers will see a decrease in their prices at a later date, as happened at the beginning of last year.

A 35% increase on the gas from British Gas is quite remarkable though, although other suppliers may well go up by the same amount, but do it on 2 or 3 separate occasions - BG have said prices won't go up anymore this year (small consolation I know).

FWIW an electricty bill over here in NZ is around 80 quid a month during winter, and about half that in the summer, and they don't seem to use gas very much so there is no gas bill. Makes you think. Climate is not much different here in Wellington either, to Edinburgh.
