"Scotland's Hidden Epidemic: The truth about MS", will be broadcast on BBC One Scotland at 2245 BST on Wednesday 23rd July (Tonight).

Elizabeth Quigley, wife of former SNP leader John Swinney, was diagnosed with MS in 2000:

"Back then I didn't know anyone with multiple sclerosis, no-one in my family had the disease, and it wasn't an illness I knew much about.

But since, I've learned Scotland is believed to have the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world.

About 10,500 - or one in 500 people here - has MS."

Always amazes me the number of people who know someone with MS yet know and understand so little of it - perhaps this is what is hidden. Everyone knows what cancer is. We all know that Scotland has one highest heart attack rates and highest cholesterol levels etc (yes I know we can do something about that, so the need for awareness is somewhat different). Everyone knows of Parkinson’s and Motor Neuron Disease.

MS on the other hand impacts more people in Scotland than anywhere else in the world. Yet so few know of its existence, would recognise it and understand what it can do to sufferers.
