I cannot stand Tom-toms. They are complete bullsh&t.

Last night, I drove behind some fool who was following his tom-tom, going about 10 miles an hour on a very clear road, obviously gazing at his tom-tom because he doesn't have the wit and guile to find his own way in the world.

Why are they legal? Why is it not legal for someone to pull a tom-tom user out of their car and beat them around the face and neck?

Anyone else hate these regressive machines and their weak-willed owners?

They're a symptom of our society today IMO. A bit of technology to do something that we've been doing fine with for decades, and suddenly most of the country reckon they 'need' it.

There have been some useful inventions for the car, e.g. speedometer  saftey features, power steering, but satnav is just nonsense.

I've never lost my way with a map and about 5 minutes of planning. I don't need some stupid electronic voice telling me which way to turn every 30 seconds.

It's just contributes to the dumbing down of the general public if you ask me.

I think they're great, maybe not for going around the town/city you know but certainly strange places.

I used mine in Spain a couple of years ago on a driving holiday and it was brilliant. My wife didn’t have to navigate (couldn’t anyway) so no ‘discussions’ about where we went wrong, and I could concentrate on driving on the wrong side of the road.

I agree though there are some half wits out there but they shouldn’t be allowed on the road with or without a Tomtom!

That's what I'm talkin bout!! Man-navigation. The real deal. Its a proper book.

I prefer to use my Navajo senses - using my hawk-eye to check out what side the moss is growing on lamp-posts and directing myself using the various smells of the takeaways.

Not relying on some programme which is going to insist I can go the wrong way up a one-way street.

PS - sorry, Jack. I bandied around a word without thinking of the consequences.

Not the tom toms fault some person in front of you was incompetent, I have one and it is the best thing ever me and the wife go away once a month to various places outside the Czech Republic and this wee thing is the first thing we pack, such a time saver!

Used to think the same way about Sat Nav, but got one in March this year for making my life easier getting to gigs etc and I love it.

Missus loves it too as I no longer can blame her for getting us lost / bollock her for her hopeless navigation skills!

Heard you can get loads of different voices for them - Just waiting for them come out with the "Nagging Wife / Husband or Backseat driver" voice.

And I assume that the Tom-Tom is always bang up-to-date and always gives you accurate directions?

I agree with Blacksaltire and Nimrod - a wee bit forethought and planning and you don't need a moron-machine in the car telling you to which exit to take off the roundabout.

And driving at 10 mph on the public highway, IMO, is a clear justification for beating the guilty driver to death with a tyre-lever. I'd never convict anyone accused of doing so.

No but it saved me loads of time whilst getting to my accomadation in various coutries I have never been to before, I agree for motorway driving or on routes you know then pointless, but when your looking for your hotel in the dark up the side of an Alp, very handy!

Keep with the times grandad. You'll be calling for a ban on mobile phones and the return of stinky pishy telephone boxes on each corner next.

Must admit for somone with no sense of direction they are a godsend but you`re not supposed to stare at them whilst driving along, they are helpful in areas you are not familiar with.

Aye, much better to unfold a massive map and try to read it whilst driving!!

I have a satnav and have used it plenty times when driving in towns I don't know. An absolute God send sometimes. That's before I even talk about the speed camera warnings which have probably saved me my license!!!

Don't think anyone is saying they are "needed" but they certainly do help.

I used one for the first time last month driving around California. If the hire car didn't have one I'd probably still be trying to get out of LA.

Had a shot of one in the cab once, it was a complete joke, if I'd gone the route reccommended, people would have been paying twice as much.

Before anyone says anything, can I just say - if you complain about taxi fares it just shows how small time you are. Stick to private hires instead - they aren't any cheaper, but at least your companions won't expect a night out anywhere other than Mood, and Witherspoons. Best to be honest.
