A few years ago I was in Charlottesville, Virginia for Independence Day.

Not a huge place so there wasn't any events and many bars and restaurants were closed.

I doubt NY will be a ghost town but some places may well close for 4th of July and/or 4th July weekend.

I thought it would be the opposite, everyone would be going mental and doing lots of American things, saying that I've never been across the water :greengrin

I went to NY for Independace Day back in 2000 when I was only about 11. I think everything was pretty normal except that at night there was a huge fireworks display out at the river which was quite spectacular. The fireworks were so big that they made the buildings shake - typically American style!

Mikey,

I'm thinking of doing the same, our 30th wedding anniversary, and did a wee bit of research. The huge fireworks put on by Macy's is the highlight, but from what I found out it is mainly street fairs, markets and politicians making speaches about independance day.

The Empire State Building charge $100 to see the fireworks, but I reckon there will be other good viewpoints, South Street Sea Port is one I'd look at, also have some event on this year.
