from Talk 107:

A Scottish mum's been arrested after abandoning her five year old son on a scorching beach in Spain for a whole day.
The youngster was rescued by tourists at the resort of Benalmadina after seven hours.
He was badly sunburnt and it's believed he needed hospital treatment.
His mum - who's been named as Jane - had been working at a stall in another part of the town, but apparently forgot to pick him up again.
It was 12 hours before she came to get her son - when she did she was taken away in handcuffs by the police.

Flippin unbelievable.....you wouldn't leave an animal like that never mind your own child. Did it have any water or drink?? :grr:

That is just shocking!

It's painful enough when an adult get sunburned, goodness knows how much pain that wee lad must be in.

Some folk don't deserve to be parents! :grr:

Sounds horrible - but in the absence of all the facts, how can we make a judgement?

Quite easily actually. I think society is right to be apalled by child abuse/neglect.

As a parent myself, I cannot for one minute imagine "forgetting" about my child for 12 hours in a foreign country. He was only 5 FFS:brickwall

:agree: Which is why many people were outraged about the behaviour of the McCanns. (remember them?)

I would never have left my children alone either. It would be wrong, and anyone doing it is at best irrational - possibly confused, maybe even just bad and heartless.

Of course we are all apalled. All I am saying here is that we have one side of the story. My instinct suggests that this was neglect, but who's to say? We don't have any explanation for the mother.

Things to consider are that:

- the newspaper would always opt for the most sensational angle on the story (dog bites man isn't news)

- the mother may be mentally ill, and not responsible for her actions

- she may have been detained against her will

- the witnesses may have been confused as to what they saw

- the report was in the News of the World, a sensationalist paper which has a track record of twisting facts to manipulate their readership

In the absence of any statement from the police, and findings by a court of law, and in the absence of any balance to this story I am keeping an open mind.

At the end of the day, what we should really be concerned about is what is best for the child, not how we punish the mother.

Sure, if someone neglects a child they should be brought to book, but don't you think it is significant that the report did not mention any charges? Knee jerk reactions don't achieve anything.

Last night a local police spokesman said: “The case is being dealt with by the National Police.”

A police station source added: “She could be charged with abandonment and neglect. The burns were serious enough to warrant hospitalisation, which underpins the gravity of it all.”
