Has anyone got any recommendations for a book that would be good for me to do my personal study on?

Not really had any good ideas so far so any help is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I went for Thomas Hardy when I did Higher English. There are more than enough themes in the important novels to make it fairly straightforward.

I chose "Jude the Obscure" but I couldn't begin to remember what I wrote about :greengrin

Can't remember what I did mine on but the only advice I would give is don't do anything too well known.

I did the very english book Trainspotting:greengrin.

Can't remember what I wrote about as my mind blocked out Higher English after 5th year as a result of the trauma but could find out.

Do "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding. Dripping with theme and plenty of notes on the internet that you can use to help you get through. I used this website for help when I was doing my Higher Personal Study a couple of years ago:

http://www.homework-online.com/lotf/theme.asp

Got a C. Still not finished the book.:greengrin

I did 1984 by George Orwell and loved it, its a brilliant book to study and write about :agree:

Alternatively you could try Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut...youll probably need to read it about 7 times to make any sense out of it at first but once you get it there is a lot of material to be drawn from it into a personal study :aok:

1984 - george orwell. still relevant today. A Phenominal piece of work.

I did 'Othello' by shakespeare for mine simply because there was so much to write about.

For a slightly more obscure read, try "Oryx and Crake" by Margaret Atwood.

A good read and enough themes to be able to write decent essays from lots of different angles.

I'm sure it'll be on the approved reading list (if such things still exist!)

It depends how easy you want to make it for yourself. Choose something well known and you'll get lots of notes online and an easy ride. It will probably be more harshly marked though as they will have seen plenty of essays saying the same things.

Choose something not so well known and you might struggle of things to write about initially but it will be more rewarding when you get on track. You will get more kudos from the marker too as it will be totally original.

1984. I wrote some bull**** about the use of secondary characters to enhance the storyline or something.

My new book, Human Interest, will be out later on this year. Shame it's not in time for your Higher English. I could have given you a hand.

I used James Joyce - Dubliners. A collection of short stories, with an integral theme running through the narrative and the individual stories - plenty to write about.

Done James Joyce's Ulysses and Finnegans Wake for my AH - fantastic works!

We did Lord of the Flies at Int 2 and it's good to answer on but a simply detestable book.

Mines was Stand By Me, or "The Body" last year, although we only done personal study for a NAB and not the exam - not sure what yours is for. Never read the book fully (do not recommend this though) as I've seen the film a few times and I passed. Littered with themes, characters etc. Good book/film aswell, can relate to it a bit.
