My parents have just bought a laptop. They have Sky tv and tried to set up the free broadband offer (2meg). They were told that that offer did not apply as thier postcode was not enabled for it yet:confused:
They live in EH4 !!
They are currently paying £17 per month for the same speed of broadband as i recieved from Sky and pay £10 a month for:confused:
They also said that the £17 pm charge would reduce to £5 pm as soon as BT enable the Postcode.
Also , they had to pay £50 connection fee as they did not want Sky talk.
I am in Broxburn and i get Sky broadband and i did not have to pay a connection fee. My line was broadband enabled as i had had tiscali before i got Sky. I dont know if this makes a difference.
Does anyone know if they are being ripped off ?
It all sounds very fishy to me.

stick the postcode and/or telephone number in the link above and it should tell you what broadband is available.
i tried EH4 3PH(blackhall primary school)and it says upto 16mb broadband with sky.

I have just went through the online ordering process and it does say that ONLY SKY CONNECT is available in that area.
Sky mid,max and free are not available.
Cant find any mention of the connection fee though. £50 seems steep

The problem is the space in the local exchange :agree:
Sky have a certain amount of connections from BT in each exchange and the one that your parents house would use is more than likely to be full with existing sky customers which is why they cant get sky broadband, not because thier area isnt enabled.
Sky Connect is sky broadband but they are having to hire the telephone line from BT and as a result costs more than standard Sky Broadband.
We had the same problems when we moved house because all the new builds being built in dunfermline have to use the existing exchange that serviced dunfermline but is on the other side of town from the new developments......which means that the max speed we can get is 2mb and because Virgin havent got cables laid in this area EVERYONE has sky and when we moved there was no more space in our exchange and we could only get Sky Connect......although because i was a brand new customer phoning asking for the full telly package with extra boxes for multiroom and premium phone/internet packages they gave me the connect broadband for the same price as the Midi package i wanted to stop a £80 a month customer from walking away :greengrin
