The Shadow Home Secretary has resigned over the 42 day detention fiasco. Not a fan of the Tories by any means, but admire him over his principled stance. :agree:

I don't get it?

According to the beeb "Mr Davis told reporters outside the House of Commons he believed his move was a "noble endeavour" to stop the erosion of British civil liberties."

So on that basis he is against 42 days and therefore would have voted with his party.

Why the resignation?

Why the resignation? He intends to fight his constituency seat on this single issue, the Lib Dems have already stated that they will not be fielding a candidate, this gives Davis a clear run. Very interesting!

Ahh, so he is testing Brown's claims that the public are behind him on this issue.

Only the public of his very own constituency though. :greengrin

Yeah, it's nothing more than a gimmick, but if it helps heap more pressure on a teetering government, then that's all the Tories are after.

Whilst it might get him some brownie points (no puns intended) in the media, it will make not one jot of a difference in the wider scheme of things.

As the Beeb have pointed out, all he has achieved is taking up the headlines today and distracting the press from grilling Brown further on "buying" the vote!

Typical Tory Fud - utterly pointless by-election. Is he paying fir it?

Quite agree that Religious Fundamentalists should be detained fir 42 days - in a secure mental institution. Delusional fe*ckers. :greengrin

Quite ridiculous from Davis IMO.

So he's going to fight a by-election in a Tory stronghold, without a Tory or Lib Dem candidate, against the most unpopular government since 1996?

How courageous, right enough...:hmmm:

A absolute bawsack IMO. Taking all the attention onto himself, and as much as he may want to believe this won't happen, this will detract from the argument that the rest of the Conservative Party are trying to get across in the House of Commons (whatever that may be, I'm never too sure with those.... ahem... shysters)

Trying to make himself a lone ranger martyr - did you see the interview with David Cameron on this topic.

Basically, in layman terms, he diplomatically said - "the guy's a bampot that's taken his eye off the bigger picture and neither I or the Conservative Party at large either knew about, or support him in his action"

And oooh, a by-election with no Lib Dem or Labour candidate standing - nice one David Davis, who's the big man now???
