Fishing.

Hello. I come of age in a few weeks and its about time i took up a man hobby.

I'm looking at fishing.

So, anyone in the know can help me with the following:

1. river or beach - which is better?
2. rods - how do you get started?
3. any other tips about getting started .

1. River for me, can't beat a Summers evening on the Tweed but don't expect to be pulling monster fish out by the dozen if that's what you mean by being better :wink:

2. For fly fishing I'd start with around a 10 - 11 ft rod around a 6-7 rating which would be fine for rivers and also get you by on lochs/fisheries. A decent Diawa setup (rod,reel and line) should cost around £100 if you shop about. Add to that a cheap set of waders an assortment of flies from a reputable shop to suit the location you're fishing and you're good to go. Don't go spending a fortune on kit until at least you know you'll keep it up

3. Splash out on a couple of fly casting lessons to get you started, the local fishery usually does them fairly cheap and it'll save you thrashing about for your first year doing nothing but scaring the fish. :greengrin

Also local knowledge is priceless, find the oldest looking fisherman/woman on your chosen beat and quiz him/her about which flies, setup and favorite spots they know.

Fisheries are always a good starting point to learn and keep the interest because of the abundance of fish in them but you can't beat catching a good sized, fin perfect wild broony on the river

I started not so long go. Couldn't catch a cold :greengrin Went to loch ossian up north ....... We caught 4 :thumbsup:
