I'm looking to buy a kilt but i can't decide what tartan to buy! My family tartan is rank so i don't fancy it. Has anyone else got a kilt with a decent looking tartan? If so what's it called? I was going to get the Hibs tartan but i'm not sure if i can afford the £250 extra!

I'm in the same boat as you in that I don't like my family tartan so when I hire a kilt I always go for blackwatch, nice and simple design and colours that will go with pretty much anything be it a formal outfit or timbies and a fitba kit :aok:

Hibs tartan???

I've had a Blackwatch for years now. As MyJo says it looks OK whatever you're up to.

As much as it pains me to say it, the Hibs tartan is shocking.

I always wear the Hunting Stewart Tartan. I believe that it is one of the most popular ones, i'm just lucky that it is also my tartan to wear.

The whole "family tartan" thing is nonsense - there's no such thing as a family tartan except in the profit-crazed imaginations of the tartan-shop propietors and the maunderings of wannabe teuchters most of whom are too fat/thin/ugly to be allowed to show their legs in public.

Wear a pattern you like, mate, and if anyone complains, tell them where to go. :agree:

Another thing - ask about, and you might be put in touch with a kilt-maker who makes the kilts for the shops. That's where I got mine about 8 years ago - an 8-yard dress kilt for £150. The lassie who made it for me lives in Helmsdale, though.

The mark-up on any tartan gear is obscene, btw.

I agree that it's important to have a tartan that you like. But I personally like it when i'm abroad and somebody asks if it's my family tartan, and i can say yes. However we're a lucky bunch in having such great national dress, that we don't really need to be picky.

Agree with doddie regarding kilt choice... go for one you like! I like the Gunn tartan but have the Flower of Scotland tartan which is quite similar. I have family that have other so called 'family tartans' and it doesn't bother me. I m sure most of the current family tartans were invented by the victorians :bitchy:.

As were most forms of highland dress that are worn today. :agree:

Blue Ramsay is a decent looking tartan.

Modern Gordon, vaguely familial and not bad to boot!

Green, yellow, black and navy - nice!
