In terms of performance petrol is, of course. But it's more expensive.
There's not really much of a debate.

Diesels have improved a lot, performance-wise, actually. VW and Honda make nice engines, and with a turbo.....
But when I can get 65-70 mpg out of a diesel, there's no argument to my mind.

Petrol by far is better, but more expensive?
Have you seen the price of diesel these days?

I think he probably means in real terms of price vs mpg, diesel is pretty much always going to work out better value per pound spent on fuel.
Anyway, the original question... which is better? They both are, depending on what the consumer wants.

The consumer wants a balance between performance and value for money :cool2:

Turbo diesel then.
Never driven a diesel car before but it will be considerably cheaper to run due to being more fuel efficient (despite diesel being more expensive than petrol) and more often than not you will be paying less road tax under new rules on a diesel model than you would for a petrol.
If your want your car too have a wee bit of oomph then get a turbo diesel, VW, Audi and Peugeot all seem to get decent reviews for thier diesel engines

NB Seat and Skoda use the same engines as VW
Fiat's 1.9 Multijet gets a good write-up too.

Interesting. I almost went down that route a couple of years ago, but decided against it as I'd have to do 2 years of driving before it would take me into the 'black' against a standard petrol car. It seems the adoption figures are v low (I suspect the hybrid :jamboak:market has taken a lot of prospective business away from LPG) and you have to be careful as not that many forecourts have LPG on tap.
When it comes to diesel and it's pound-for-pound better economy though, you should remember to factor in a few things:
1. Diesel cars tend to be a tad more expensive than their petrol 'equivalent'
2. Diesel cars tend to have shorter service intervals than petrol cars, so you'll probably pay more in servicing
3. Drive them before deciding, turbo diesels don't have the same broad band of power distribution as petrols, the power tends to come in lumps. Depends what you like.

I currently have the Skoda Octavia Elegance with a 2.0 TDI PD (140bhp) engine, my colleague has the same car but with a petrol engine 2.0 FSI (150bhp) whilst I am getting over 1000km to a full tank he gets a measly 650km,
No argument, DIESEL wins.
Same car, similar performance and much cheaper to run!

Diesels all the way, Great MPG and the newer diesel cars and pretty rapid too.

If you don't mind driving around in a car that sounds like a tractor, diesel all the way.

Thats the older diesels, Im amazed at how quiet some of the newer ones are. Really smooth when idleing and on the road.

Petrol is more expensive because it will give you significantly less miles to the gallon than diesel.
I'm waiting on my new car being delivered -- it's a diesel. I trust it's going to be better than the diesel I had about 12 years ago which had a 0-60 (60! Oh if only!) of about 7 minutes and sounded like a lawn mower engine rolling down a hill in an oil drum.
But I'm sick of getting ripped for tax and spending all my spare time in petrol station forecourts, so diesel it is.

Diesel is about 10p per litre more expensive nowadays?

Gone down the diesel route as well now.
Same make of car as my previous petrol one but a tank of diesel lasts twice as long as a tank of petrol did and my road tax has halved.
Engine is quiet as a mouse and the kick between 2nd and 3rd gear and also 3rd and 4th gear is very zippy.
I had a previous diesel car about 15 years ago. A Peugeot 309 GRD Turbo. At that time the French diesel engines were far and away ahead of everything else for reliability, quietness and fuel efficiency.
Nowadays there's not really such a thing as a bad diesel engine .... except the ones on lorries, buses & tractors!

My current car, petrol driven, gives me about 31 miles to the gallon on average. The diesel I'm getting is promising something like 55 miles to the gallon. So, I will pay more up front on fuel but, taking into account the difference in pump prices, at about 20% there or there abouts I should spend less overall.
So, it says on the box.
