Along with the first cuckoo, and the blossom on the trees, resident and travellers in North Edinburgh have something else to look forward to each summer.

Once again, there has been an outbreak of blanket banners wishing people happy birthday. If it's their birthday, I hope they are happy - but surely the embarassment of having the whole world know you have just turned 50 is a bit much to take?

Perhaps someone has a business idea, which could incorporate the banners and roundabouts of the Lothians?

That roundabout is treacherous enough without banners distracting drivers' attentions.

I like the occasional banner on the red bridge over the road further down.

Not quite sure what it would say, but i never tire of seeing someone's dirty old bedsheets with their scrawl on it wishing some stranger a happy birthday.

Its become rather mandane and tiresome - perhaps declarations of an alternative nature would be better.

Something like "Congrats Agnes McClumphie on your all-clear fi the Chlamydia Clinic"

or "well done Wullie...oot at last!"

I dont think so. When I was growing up there were all kinds of crap signs sprouting all over the place on stranger's birthdays. I think the accepted procedure is for them to be done for landmark birthdays though - 21, 30, 40 etc. I always think its a bit random to see "Julie 26 Today!".

It would be quite funny to use them to dob in work and brew cheaters though.

"Jimmy Dodds - yer leg's fine ya huddy - get back tae work!"
