What are the rules on learning to ride a motorbike?

Im meaning engine size etc.

And can you just go out and buy a bike and teach yourself?

you have to pass a basic competancy test before going on the road, i think it costs about 50 quid. If you have a drivers licence once passed this you can ride on the road as a learner for four years with engine sizes of up to 90cc, i think!

My dad talked to me about this ages ago and those are the rough details i remember, im sure someone will come alogn and put it all right for you though!

Several options.

Do a CBT (about £100) then ride upto a 125cc with L plates. This certificate lasts for 2 years! If you dont pass your full test with that time you have to do your CBT again!

Do your A2 test - a test on a 125cc machine - pass this and you can ride any bike with power of upto 33bhp (about 250cc) for the first 2 years. After 2 years you can ride anything you want. Cost is about £500. This usually lasts about 4 days - 1 for the CBT, 3 on a 125cc with a test at the end - normally on the 3rd day.

Or do your direct access, test on normally a 500cc bike. Once you pass this, you can ride whatever you want (be sensible mind...)! Cost is in region of £650. This would normally last about 5 days - 1 CBT, 2 on 125cc, 3 days on 500cc with test on 5th day!!

If you are over 21 - I would recommend the direct access if money allows!
