don't know if i'm missing something here, but why is it necessary to spend £190m on upgrading a train station when theres a bloody massive one already about a mile away?
also why do they keep raving about this new building having a glass roof? why dont they just not put a glass roof on it and save the taxpayer a few million that could be better spent elsewhere

I thought this thread was going to be about the traditional Edinburgh contraception method. It's a tad risky IMO.
IF it goes ahead, will end up like the parliment and trams, costing about 3x the original price stated

Would it be possible to incorporate a football stadium in the development? It would be perfect for a team firing blanks.

Some of us are thrown off at Linlithgow...
...and some of us never get out of Queen Street.
Is it not the case that Waverley has reached capacity so if we (or whoever) wants more trains we've got to have more capacity at the station - there's no room for Waverley to expand any further
More trains from Fife to cope with all the .netters that are going to live there :agree:

Unlikely, Network Rail are too tight to let that happen.

Looks quite smart, but the actual bit where the trains are looks exactly the same as it is today!!! (Without the orrible wee waiting room.)
Seriously, if I saw something like this in any city other than Edinburgh, I'd be impressed, as I think most would be, but our council comes up with it and everyone's on their back. Are they damned if they do, damned if they don't?

Have to say (whisper this) I've seen evidence of a few municipal improvements of late.
St Andrews Square
Nicholson Square
and it looks like they are doing some work on Gardners Crescent.
Looks like someone may have realised that there is more to making a city than just building flats.

Of COURSE there is Mr Rolls, there's building hotels, a pointless tram line, closing off streets and new exciting empty office developments too :greengrin

thats what I don't understand. if they're hoping to treble passenger numbers won't they need some new platforms? the new building looks nice but how is the extra space in the upstairs bit going to make a difference to how many passengers it can handle?
Disability access laws play some part in the adaptation/renovation of the station- all buildings/public premises have all to be adapted by a certain time or result in closure. Haymarket is pretty handy for some people to get to rather than having to go away into town to the waverley :agree:

The explanation for this redevelopment is contained in the article.
to cope with an expected doubling of passenger numbers to nine million a year over the next two decades.
City leaders today described regenerating the station as "essential" to ensure that the city continues to grow and cope with the increased demand for public transport.
And more.
I think it's a really positive proposal for Edinburgh.

There's no end of vacancies for project managers in the capital. Do you know any?

It looks good... I spent a year until the end of Feb living on Richmond Terrace just around the corner. The area could certainly do with a facelift.... and some air freshener too

Nonsense chaps. Trams a great idea and long overdue. The ones in Dublin are fantastic. Also, lets have a congestion charge. It works a treat in London where you can actually breathe air instead of choking when you step outside.

A decent rail link to the airport would be a good start
