A sad farewell to Humphrey Lyttelton who has died (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7367385.stm) at the fine old age of 86.

A huge figure in British jazz but also the superbly funny presenter of "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue" for many, many years.

Cheers for the memories Humph :agree:

Although he had reached a grand old age I was still sorry to hear this. He seemed to be full of life when I last listened to him on the radio only a few weeks ago doing his jazz legends stuff, irrascible, informative, witty and always entertaining.

RIP

I didn't see this thread until now, or I'd have been on sooner.

"British jazz" ain't that good, tbh, but Humph was one of the very best of them.

And his contributions to "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue" were classic. First we lost Willie Rushton, now Humph. Oh, dear. :boo hoo:

I've never heard "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue" but I heard Simon Mayo and guests discussing this guy and the show.

Seemingly there are DVD's or CD's on the go, so I may have to purchase some and educate myself in the ways of Radio 4. (well, I am getting on a bit :greengrin)

They regularly play 'Haven't A Clue' on BBC Radio 7 on DAB, Freeview etc and you can listen again to the whole week's shows online here...

Sorry, it must have been on the previous week. It does pop up on BBC7 from time to time. Honestly.

It appears that Radio 4 are making Sunday 15th June a day of tribute to Humph, so no doubt there will be some "I'm Sorry..."s broadcast then.

Hopefully a few re-runs as well on 4,7 or online.

Get recordings of the early shows, with Willie Rushton. Pure genius those shows - especially the ongoing saga (pun intended) of dear old Humph and 'our scorer, the lovely Samantha'.

Some tribute stuff on Radio 4 today - Humph's appearance on Desert Island Discs in half an hour, a special about "I'm Sorry..." presented by Stephen Fry between 12 and 1 and an interview by Lyttelton with Louis Prima after that.

No doubt all available on "Listen Again" if you miss it.

Ta, lex. I missed it at 9 (SWMBO wanted to watch "The Tudors") but it was repeated after midnight and I got it then.

Excellent tribute to a very nice man and a very gifted musician.

A lot of genuine affection expressed there, both from the musicians and the ISIHAC crew. (A wee thought for Willy Rushton too.)

And his "Samantha" lines on ISIHAC were classic. Only Humph could have delivered them so well.

Anyone fancy a game of 'Mornington Crescent'? :cool2:

(That would be the "Hibernian Variation" aka "Morningside Crescent", in which diagonals are allowed on the third Tuesday in the month, the Grassmarket Parabola is enforced, and you incur a three-move penalty if you go west of Haymarket Station.)

Great retrospective about a clearly well- and widely-loved guy and the concert recording afterwards was very enjoyable too.

Looking forward to the stage version of "Clue" (as they seem to refer to it :greengrin) on BBC4 in just over an hour.

Just watched the tributes for the second time- god his music made me smile and he could make me laugh out loud like no one else.

RIP Humph you'll be missed.

Watched the stage show and the tribute - Great stuff and and a good insight to the lifetime of a man I knew very little about.

A lot of jazz fans didn't reckon him, mainly because he was white and English as opposed to black and American, but while I would never suggest he was on the same level as John Coltrane or Charlie Parker (who was?) he was a good musician who brought a lot of pleasure to a great many people.

I didn't know his music too well (I'm not really into that sort of jazz) but I'm a great fan of ISIHAC and I frankly cannot imagine who the BBC will get to chair the show now.

Mind you, I thought it would go to the wall after Willie Rushton died, and it's still going strong.

At least we still have the lovely Samantha....
