Buses run out of fuel by Monday
Lothian Buses will run out of fuel after services end on Sunday night
The main bus company serving Edinburgh and the surrounding area has confirmed its fleet of buses will run out of fuel over the weekend.
Lothian Buses said it could not run services after Sunday evening.
The company had been due a delivery of fuel on Thursday, but BP have told them they have been instructed to prioritise delivery to petrol stations instead.
Fuel shortages are feared following the proposed shut down of Grangemouth oil refinery over pensions at the weekend.
Neil Renilson, chief executive of Transport Edinburgh Limited, which runs Lothian Buses, said he called the Scottish Government to note his concerns over prioritising petrol stations over public transport.
He told BBC Scotland news website: "This is a complete reversal of the situation during the tanker strike a few years ago when public transport was deemed a priority user.
"We fail to understand why the ordinary petrol station should be prioritised above public transport.
"The reality is if we don't have fuel we can't run any buses. It just doesn't make sense."

The lunatics are really running the asylum now eh? We get told to use public transport in favour of cars whenever possible yet now we are basically being told completely the opposite thing with car users being favoured over public transport companies. One would think that the government almost want people to panic buy fuel at the inflated price and in turn the tax the government can claim from it to fill its empty coffers.

Can I just say this would be less of a problem if we had trams that ran on electricity. Perhaps some of the ignorant, ill-informed sods who criticise the project will take this on board, and recognise that petrol driven vehicles are unsustainable for the long term.
I'm not holding my breath.

I've heard that LRT will be getting a delivery in time to avert any crisis, although only 75% of what they would get normally.
I suspect that will mean they'll get their next delivery 25% sooner :duck:

There will be no problem with fuel for buses at the moment, the council sent a bulletin letter to major city centre businessess yesterday informing them of the situation.
Travel into work
Bus companies, including Lothian Buses, have fuel to run services as normal and will continue to receive a guaranteed supply. Use the bus if you can and minimise car travel.

But why not have electrified buses?
As one Taxi Driver said to me tell me what a tram can do that a bus cant. And I'll tell you what a bus can that a tram cant.
2 trams out of action on Princes street in both directions - what then?
Seems to me the network is too restricted and panders to developers and other constituents. Folks at the end of the lines (coincidentally it seems new developments) will get all the seats will there be anything other than standing room only if that? Be interesting to see.
I saw one offshoot line that was supposed to go to Murrayfield/Ravelston. Whats the huge populous there? Or is it to stop the 4x4 school runs by letting the lambs loose on trendy green clean public transport?

I've not really seen much of the plans (much more interested in the Waverley Line, living down here :greengrin) but wouldn't an offshoot to Murrayfield be intended for the stadium?
Not forgetting there will be 400,000 yams decamping there when the luxury Villa Romanova development starts going up in Gorgie :greengrin

Electricity is no more a guaranteed power source than petrol. Many buildings in Edinburgh have generators to provide power in the event of losing electricity for that very reason.
No matter how much money is poured into trams and how many roads are dug up to lay tram tracks, the majority of commuters will still be travelling on non-RTS forms of transport - that fact will remain even when all fossil fuel resources have been used up.

That is true. I was also thinking that I shouldn't have been down filling up gerry cans with unleaded - I wasn't panicking however.:agree:
