I'm not devastated. If you've ever seen Bowling for Columbine you'll know why. Maybe he was a good actor, I'll admit I've nly seen him in Ben Hur, but in my opinion his views on guns were wrong and he showed a lot of insensitivity on a delicate issue while he was head of the NRA.

He was a good actor and star of the original Hollywood Epic Blockbusters. Like you, not so comfortable with his view on 'Cold Dead Hand' attitude regards guns.

Well said young man. Showed himself for exactly what he was. This may sound harsh but the world is a better place without people like him

Heston was actually a liberal back in the day - he walked with Martin Luther King and Sinatra once said of him "that he better watch himself, he'll give actors a good name", but yes, probably like most of us in our later years we're likely to be more conservative. A superb actor with dubious politics later on in life.
And let's be honest, in Bowling for Columbine he comes across (in the interview portion at least) as a frail, old confused man. I'd imagine a lot of his speeches on behalf on the NRA were prepared for him and he probably didn't mean everything he said. Also Bowling for Columbine, as a good a documentary as it is, is a Michael Moore film, was will display a lack of neutrality.

He started off as a liberal, and in his early career he was associated with other non-establishment figures like Orson Welles. He had a starring role in "A Touch of Evil", which may very well be the best black-and-white 'film noir' ever shot - opposite Welles, who also directed. Heston only took the part on condition that Welles was allowed to direct, and the result is a really superb film, almost hypnotic and VERY creepy.
How he got from there to some of the stuff he did in later life, I can't say, but the last sight of him running away from Michael Moore in "Bowling for Columbine" was a sad reflection on the man. TBH, I wouldn't lose sleep if I never saw stuff like "Ben Hur", "Planet of the Apes", or "Airport" ever again. Over-budgeted, over-inflated cheese, IMO. With CH the Ponging Parmesan himself, every time.
Although I suspect we're going to get ample opportunity in the next couple of weeks.... :cool2:

I'm sure he had Altzheimers' at the time though. Despite me disagreeing with Hestons stance on guns, that twat Michael Moore did himself and the films credibility no favours by pursuing a clearly frail and confused old man and making him look bad. If he had wanted credibility, he should have picked on someone who could defend himself, but then again, Moore likes his cheap shots.
Anyway, enough on Michael Moore, RIP Charlton. Great actor, no matter whether you agree with his politics.

I also disagree with him supposedly being a great actor.

i wonder if anyone, in a fit of creating a sense of irony, has tried to prize something out of his "cold, dead hands".

I always sort of hoped that he'd get it between the eyes as a sort of poetic justice.
