If the following was football related it would probably have been front page news - absolutely shocking behaviour, but they are rugby fans so they were just probably having a larrrff :bitchy:
ENGLAND FAN FALLS VICTIM TO RACIAL ATTACK IN EDINBURGH
Drunken Scotland rugby fans have targeted an England supporter in a sickening attack in Edinburgh. It happened in Bristo Square after the recent Six Nations game at Murrayfield. A group of up to 40 people surrounded the man, as louts urinated on him. Many of them filmed the incident on their mobile phones.

Aye, that'll be the same rugby fans who ripped a wing mirror off the 22 bus I was on passing Muddyfield at 2:45 that day.
Just a bit of high jinks...nothing to worry about.:bitchy:

I'm a massive rugby fan, but whilst i accept that the sport is not 'white' but then it's not as bad as football has been previously.
I was in rome at the weekend for the game, and beforehand and prior to the game, both sets of fans were mingling with each other no problem. Plenty of beer consumed also :greengrin That was also my experience of the game at murrayfield against England.
But your always going to get rugby bashing on here, yet football has had more than its fair share of unsavoury moments and behavioiur by fans. I've never heard about pitch battles by rugby fans, and i suppose the worst behaviour is when we play England. But then i remember when we played England at Hampden for Euro 2000, some scenes from that day were shocking.
I'm going to be controversial here, but Rugby has been traditionally well supported by an "upper class":duck:(not the best way to describe it i'm sorry). But now there is a larger cross section of society supporting the game, which is fantastic news that i welcome. However there are eejits that come with that 'branching out' Possibly football is getting cleaner, but rugby is moving down and so football fans can 'slag' rugby fans off, but say this happened by some rugby fans during the height of the football hooligan era, then football fans wouldn't be in such a strong position to criticise.
Although it is a disgraceful act that was probably caused by students, and i hope those accountable have the book thrown at them. :rules:

One thing I find interesting about the story is that fact that it's being labeled as racial. Now I know this all came about because he's English and the louts were Scottish but I don't really think the attack is racially motivated. It's first and foremost sports related. This may be a controversial opinion and it's one I find difficult to put into words but the man wasn't attacked JUST because he was English.

I doubt they would have done it to an Italian fan.
Or French, Welsh or Irish.

I hear ya, but I also doubt that they would do it to just any English person either. I think it's because he was both a rugby fan and a English. It doesn't matter anyway, it's inexcusable behaviour.

Rugby fans have been getting away with disgraceful behaviour for years - anyone who's lived in and around Edinburgh as long as I have knows that. The City Centre on an International night? A rotten disgrace, with the police mostly turning a blind eye. Football fans behaving like that would be lifted very quickly, AND get a good kicking into the bargain. But then a lot of polis I know play ruggah.
And it was a bunch of STUDENTS, not genuine Ruggah-Buggahs, wasn't it?

Strange that this doesn't seem to have been reported elsewhere, I'd have my doubts about whether this 'attack' happened. Could well have been part of the hilarious hi-jinks that the rugger fraternity are known for.

:agree: Rugby fans are worst than footie fans - just go along into town when a match is on and it is there for all to see - racism, bigotry, aggression, fighting, throwing pints at and urinating over rival fans etc. One of many that springs to mind immediately was during the 1991 Rugby Sevens - in the Rose Street Brewery (not sure if it still is that), Scottish fans got pints of Guinness (sp) and chucked the whole lot, glass an all, to the irish fans inside and outside the pub. The place was covered in the stout and glass. Three police vans and seven cars were there and Rose Street was barricaded from Frederick Street to St Davids Street. Bear in mind that they have been drinking before, during and after the game as well. Everyone who was in pubs in that part of Rose Street that night had to leave after being questioned etc.
I would say that it is time they banned alcohol consumption during rugby games since they are not by any means "better behaved" than footie fans.

I've read it over again and i'm not sure what you see is so wrong. I possibly got the order wrong - i should've started off by emphasising how despicable an act it was. And then given my view.
And in terms of your experiences in Edinburgh, i've not had any hassle on international weekends to be honest. But after a derby it can be tense.
Whats with the whole 'ruggah' thing though, the majority of rugby players in Scotland wouldn't come from backgrounds viewed as posh.

The area that the attack happpened is known as a student area, at Bristo square on a saturday night you have Potterow, a student nightclub which is always packed on a saturday, with hour long queues frequent. You also have teviot across the road which is normally busy on a saturday.
I was actually out that night, at the area and it was as full of students as ever, and probably a bit more than normal with them being in the pub watching a game. And there were obviously more scotland and england colours on show.
I think that it's a high probability of who did it though, i have nothing against students at all. I mean, it could have been David Murphy and Garry O up on the lash together who did it, probably not though.
Honestly, when something comes up on hibs.net about a car crash in gorgie, or something stupid happens in the USA. We are quick to say stupid yam, or stupink yank. Well IMO that area on a saturday night is prime Student area. It might not of been though, i never said it was, there is a good chance though, hence the use of 'probably'.

Your more than welcome to your opinion, but there aren't instances in the grounds that have been seen at the football previously. I know nothing major has happened at the footy recently, but there is a track record. Believe me, i think that it would be great to have a pint at ER.
And in terms of your example, it's not uncommon for pints to be thrown over people when drink has been consumed. I know that i don't, but mates have been soaked by this.

They're equally as bad as each other IMHO, although, despite me being a rugby player and fan, I do agree that rugby fans tend to get away with things a lot more than football fans do. Probably is because of the whole "upper class" thing.
And before anyone asks, I'm not upper class, homosexual or a farmer....
The common factor in all the trouble we get after any rugby or football matches, or in fact pretty much every saturday night, is too much drink. Why can't British people be responsible with their drinking and not feel the need to act like total twats when they've got a few drinks in them?:bitchy:
I would say that it is time they banned alcohol consumption during rugby games since they are not by any means "better behaved" than footie fans.

For years now, most football related violence has been hushed up by the media (probably at the request of the authorities/police). There are still paggers, but we don't hear about them any more. This seems logical to me, as the more publicity this stuff is given, the more 'glamorous' it becomes to some people, thus exacerbating the problem.
Who's to say that a similar policy isn't applied to egg chasing? :dunno:
