On the basis the previous Labour Government promised the people WOULD decide, via referendum, I'd like ma say aye...:devil::devil::devil:
However, I wouldn't waste your time asking that question to the first Scottish fisherman you can find, recently unemployed with thanks to our friends in deepest Europe :brickwall ... the response may be somewhat less cordial...

Democratically elected government, with a majority. They can do what the hell they want. Not a great believer in referenda. We elect a government to make decisions.

Even decisions against the will of the people that elected them??
i voted labour on the promise of a referendam on this... and i got fek all from them when it came down to it.
yesterdays budget was another farce. all they are doing now is making all pay more and more tax to fund ***** like the olympics :brickwall

Therein lies the problem Livvy, it is against your wishes. Is it against the wishes of the majority of UK citizens? Who knows. If you have a referendum for that then we should have a referendum for everything including the budget. Then no new laws come into being and we sail along quite happily with the staus quo, going down the dustpipe so to say. If the ONLY reason you voted labour was to get a referendum on this then I guess you have right to be peeved. Still confused as to why people are upset and confused when politicians do not do what they said they would before the elections. Surely it should be expected.

...put simply;
Bliar intimated clearly and concisely the PEOPLE would decide on this matter.
Bliar left, and before doing so, renaged of this promise which, he cannot deny.
Brown is no better.
This one is clear cut - Labour SAID the PEOPLE would decide.
Labour are NOT letting the people decide.
I think thats the mos telling thing here...
