Ok so here's my question,
When did the term 'a unit' become common place, it seems every TV pundit uses the term, usually preceded by, some, big, impressive. Even see it being used on .net now a days.
In the olden days we talked of players or even used names.

You don't often hear the term 'pint sized' anymore now.
Changed days as a lad like Mickey Weir would really struggle to make it as a pro these days, and that's just in Scotland. No chance what so ever down south.

We once signed a Lithuanian striker who John Hughes described as ‘a big lump of a boy’ which I thought was quite a nice phrase.
He was pish though

There was a six foot ten baseball pitcher called Randy Johnson who was known as The Big Unit.
Also a Chicago NFL guy called The Fridge.

That’s the sort of thing I think as a proper unit.
Works for me.

“He’s eight stones wet through.”
Made more sense when jerseys were jerseys, I guess.

Growing up as a lad, that was a slang term for a tadger. "Dion Dublin, bet he's got a big unit"

I agree with the OP, and disagree with you; A Micky Weir type build player couldn't make it down South these days.
That's all.

That's funny because I've been meaning to ask the exact same question.
Sounds like a very strange term to me.

This thread has him listed at 5ft 4 so unless that is wrong that's what I'm basing it on.
