    Hearts signings - Pre Contracts

    https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfer-news/blair-spittal-latest-hearts-transfer-32412276

Dhanda, Penrice and Spital all signing for hearts.

All good signings for the league

Sadly true and i dare say cost them little as they do an OF and weaken the opposition

They’ll certainly have plenty depth, Spittal has had a very good season in a poor team. Not bothered about Penrice or Dhanda really.

Solid players, know the league etc. Hardly earth shattering or blowing the budget as Budge suggested earlier this week.

Excuse me if I think our ambitions are higher than 3 bottom six players.

SJM was a bottom six player. To me having a good few experienced course and distance players is a pretty sensible option. Decent start to their summer signings and I hope we have a sprinkling on known quantities among players who may be more of a risk, regardless of their pedigree

Penrice is the youngest and 25 sjm was 20 and played 90 games not much comparison. Of course you can get gems from the bottom 6 but these 3 are all mediocre and already developed. I don't think you should sign players that you wouldn't want to start so don't get the just squad players.

If we had signed them I'd be disappointed TBH . Average at best .

McGinn is often used as this example and it’s not really a fair comparison as he’s the extreme exception to the rule and was signed young. We signed him aged 20 and he was playing in the English Premiership by around 24 / 25 years of age and is one of Scotlands best players for a generation. Comparable to Andy Robertson who was also gone by his early 20s. Basically if your going to get a superstar from bottom 6 clubs it’s going to be when they are teens or very early 20s.

These 3 are not the next John McGinn. They are all aged 25+ and by that age you tend to know what you’re getting from a player. If they were in the John McGinn category they wouldn’t be signing for Hearts at their age.

I can think of very few players in recent years who have went from bottom 6 or lower the to old firm, Hibs hearts or Aberdeen at 25+ and been a great success. I can however think of a very long list who have signed for Hibs alone and turned out to be terrible.

In short I wouldn’t Hibs to sign either of these 3 therefore not fussed that hearts have. It weakens 3 of our opponents without really strengthening hearts imo.

Shankland was a free transfer at 24 I think and a bottom 6 player that is the main reason they are in 3rd. It does happen but I agree it is unusual. As others have said our examples like Paul McGinn and Gogic would be better comparisons and both I would argue were good signings. Gogic having a great season in a team above us at the moment. Nothing is certain when players change clubs but I would taken a few of those signings as bench players over the likes of Jair, Harbottle or McKirdy and I bet they are a good deal cheaper. One off them could just fit in and be a starter and all should be decent additions with little risk. I'm not suggesting we fill our first 11 with bottom six players. I'm saying they are sensible low risk options. Hearts will unfortunately have a long period in Europe most likely. If we get in that position we need players like that to give depth for 3 games a week

Shankland was signed from the Belgian top flight for about £500k and was about to turn 27.

I'm not just saying this as it's them but I'd be devastated if they are the kind of player we're after this summer with our new investment and scouting. Halkett level signings just good enough to get you top 6 but that is it.

Moriah-Welsh is multiple levels above all of them

But sometimes you have to point out the malignant, stinking elephant in the room, as my boss would say.

My mum always said, if you sign Motherwell, Ross County and Livingston players, you’ll get a Motherwell, Ross County and Livingstone type team.

Three decent enough players but if they become first picks then I'm not concerned in the slightest.

I'm more concerned with what we do and I think we will sign better.

They are pretty solid squad players and will probably be vital to Hearts when they have the Sunday, Thursday, Sunday schedule early season. The types who will come in and help grind out an ugly 1-0 away at St Johnstone on the back of a midweek skelping.

If it's the height of their ambitions then I'm not concerned but as far as a bit depth goes then it's decent business.

Agree. Theyre starting from a position of strength, so trying to solidify their position with some solid players that know our league is a sensible strategy. They’re not going to make their starting 11 any better but their squad will improve.

I’d have been disappointed had we signed any of them though as we need big improvements.

Genuine question, who do they replace in their team/squad? Who are they likely to lose in the summer?

    Shankland, Cochrane, Beningime

Maybe Halkett, not sure what they've done about him.

Full back for a team getting relegated
Spittal - I don’t get the hype had a better season. But I always found him lightweight and meh
Dhanda - nah not bothered and not at our level of player we’re after

All good for that mob however 👍🏻
