    Outdoor swimming

Where's cleanest around Edinburgh? Porty/Wardie/Silverknowes/Cramond? Or are they all the same?

Not sure of specific quality (there will be a SEPA report somewhere online) but the wee beach area between Newhaven and Gypsy Brae regularly has open swimmers in the water. Mostly middle aged women with woolly hats on. I don't think they put their heads or faces in the water.

    Baltic. Even in summer.

The reservoir behind the Pentlands is supposedly good for swimming.

My wife is into this madness. She'd suggest Threipmuir reservoir at Balerno.

There's nothing wrong with my sister-in-laws wooly hat!

They swim (and have occasional BBQs) at Wardie and Porty.

Not sure this will pass the naughty word filter ... they're known as the Blue Tits 😆

I read something a while back about the number of sewage outlets that go out into the Forth from the Edinburgh side along that coast (I think the number was 16 or something like that) and made my mind up that short of one of my kids falling in the water and jumping in to rescue them that I'd never go into that water under any circumstances.

The reservoirs sound like a much better option if open water swimming is your thing.

I did my bronze medallion and lifeguard training many years ago, I'm actually a strong swimmer - but there's something about Mother Nature and open water that creeps me out a bit, it's a dangerous game.

My partner talks about open water swimming a lot and has some friends who swear by it - by all accounts there are few things that can get those natural endorphins flowing quite like it.

Victor McDade and spouse did a round-Scotland tour meeting such groups, one of which is called the Freezing F*nnies.

    Thanks for all the answers.

There is a FB group for a group that do open water swimming at Glencourse reservoir. I follow them and intend to get involved but havent got along yet.

as another said Threipmuir also meant to be good, something to do with it being peat at the bottom so reasonably warm.
