Will Martinez be the first World Cup holder who actually played in the final to play at ER?

Edit - not quite. Jack Charlton in 1968.
    Klinsmann, scored twice at ER.

Actually there is another World Cup winner who has played at Easter Road this century.

Juninho won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and played against us with Celtic in a 2-2 draw in 2004:

Unlike Charbonnier, he played a few minutes I'm the final.

Also worth noting Villa just signed a player for 51 / 52 million.

Most expensive transfer fee to ever play at ER ? (If he plays?).

Joelinton played for Newcastle v Hibs in 2019 - he was bought for 40 million.
Arsenal paid a reported £72m for Nicolas Pepe who came off the bench against us. They also paid a reported £55m for Aubameyang plus a £45m for Partey.

There is a lot of people not looking at the whole thread and repeating things. So players who have played against Hibs and played in the world cup final and won it.

    So we have
    Juninho
    Gordon Banks
    Nobby Stiles
    Jack Charlton

Please feel free to add others

Lol, that's not what the OP asked.

They have the Sweden national keeper Olsen as the back up to Martinez. Not totally out of the question they'd start Olsen though I imagine it's unlikely. He's played more international games in the last 3 years than club games.

So I think this is the definitive list of World Cup Winners to play a competitive match at Easter Road -

Juninho, Jack Charlton (played in WC Final & a current WC holders at the time).

Lionel Charbonnier, Norman Hunter (unused WC squad players & current WC holders at the time).

Jose Altafini (Mazzola), Ian Callaghan (didnt play in WC Final & not current WC holders at the time).

Dino Zoff, Gennaro Gattuso, Claudio Gentile , Geatano Scirea (all won WC later in career after playing at Easter Road).

(Also, Klinsmann, winner of a previous WC, and ER fixture not against Hibs).

Dietmar Hamann also played for Bayern against Raith Rovers at ER if not already mentioned.

The thing about that we should take heart from is Bayern only beat Raith 2-0. Gives me hope for tomorrow anyway

I've only skimmed the thread but it strikes me that unless Stephanie Guivarche played at ER in his spell with the Huns, then the Villa keeper will be the first World Cup holder to play at ER? Is that right?
I'll be amazed if he plays though

Just dredging up this thread again as I was looking through some old programmes and I think I've found another World Cup winner who has played at ER. Admittedly it was in a Friendly.. but still an interesting one .

Karl Mai - Left Midfielder who I think played in the 1960 Friendly at ER for Bayern Munich. He played for West Germany in their 1954 Winning World Cup Team. In the programme from the match he is listed as one of their key players, but I can't find confirmation of the line-ups. (yes I'm bored)

I beleive Hibs won the Friendly 3-0 and I think the scorers were Baker, Preston and McLeod

I'm sure Nobby Styles played for Middlesbrough in a friendly against us at ER.
He did, then got carried off after being introduced to a Bertie Auld tackle.

    Hee! Hee!

    Was at that game

Bertie and Nobby were at it all game

Bertie saw his over the ball challenge coming rode the tackle but landed awkwardly on the hard surface breaking his collar bone

Tam McNiven was quickly on the scene to make the diagnosis

‘ Give me five minutes’ says the Bold Bertie

5 minutes later Nobby is getting carried off on a stretcher

    ‘Ref sub! ‘

Middlesbrough scored two late goals to win the game

Class act was Bertie silky smooth but hard as nails must have been some player in his prime

    RIP

I didn't realise Altafini's nickname was Mazzola. He, Altafini, was the fastest player I have ever seen in the flesh, at Easter Road.

Quicker than Arthur Duncan believe it or not !

Decent player, but never worth that money. Although that deal was very dodgy. Lille never saw anything like 72 million.

He was also far better for Arsenal than guys like Anthony and Sancho were for United.

Would have been about 35 years old then

    Was electric and could finish

Napoli left him at home after the first leg with a minor knock

    Big mistake

I was there too, with my old man.

Not a great game from memory, apart from that one incident that was burned into my memory for ever more. As you say, Bertie was as hard as they come on the pitch and Styles had chosen the wrong guy to tangle with.

Saw the Lisbon Lions at Tiny and you could see why they were Champions of Europe they were quick slick every man a cracking player all born within 20 miles of Glasgow and played as a unit It was like watching a one touch training session
Guys like Bertie and Bobby Murdoch in midfield with their precision passing the sheer pace of Bobby Lennox the trickery of Jimmy Johnstone feeding deadly strikers who didn’t need to be asked twice My hero Joe McBride couldn’t even get a game due to injury Should have been Hibs Rant over

Does it count if you get carried off?

Pre-match was all about the Nobby & Bertie Auld match up, not Eddie Turnbull's first match as Hibs manager. Sure enough, Nobby went in over the top, Bertie read it & Nobby came of much worse.

Sorry Billy & Auld Hibs, this is what you get when you post before reaching the end of the thread.
