Some of the Vasco de Gama players who played against Hibs in 1956 won the WC with Brazil in 1958. Someone on here claimed 4 but I haven't looked into that.

I'm sure Nobby Styles played for Middlesbrough in a friendly against us at ER.
    You beat me to it.

I believe so, Helmut Rahn scored 2 goals including the winner in the final, but appears to have missed the game at Easter Rd.
Didn't play in the first leg either. None of the players who played for RWE against Hibs home or away were even in the West German squad in 1954 from what I can see.

Not a Hibs game, but Jurgen Klinsmann and Oliver Khan played against Raith at ER in the Uefa Cup. Franz Beckenbauer and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge were watching in the old centre stand.
Klinsmann also played for (W) Germany u21s v Scotland u21s at ER, I have the program somewhere.

Perhaps a few other future World Cup winners played.

Messi has played against Hibs of course, but not at Easter road.

Gennaro Gattuso and Jack Charlton are another two.
Was he not a winner AFTER playing at ER?

So are a few other names mentioned in the thread.

Also worth noting Villa just signed a player for 51 / 52 million.

Most expensive transfer fee to ever play at ER ? (If he plays?).

Joelinton played for Newcastle v Hibs in 2019 - he was bought for 40 million.

Joelinton played for Newcastle recently - he was bought for 40 million.
Based on the Transfermarkt values their squad is worth about 50 times ours. We've got a small chance, best odds on a win on Wednesday is 10/1 (was 6/1 a day or 2 ago).

Lionel Charbonnier may have played for the Huns at Easter Road, not sure? Again was in a world cup winning squad without featuring.
Was third choice keeper in France 98 squad. Played at ER I think as sure I remember him in a game. Signed for Huns just after France won it.

I've only skimmed the thread but it strikes me that unless Stephanie Guivarche played at ER in his spell with the Huns, then the Villa keeper will be the first World Cup holder to play at ER? Is that right?

Assuming the rules are that they have to have won the WC before they played us and it has to be a competitive game vs Hibs, I think this one counts…

    Jose Altafini

Came on for Juve second half 1974 and tore us a new one

    Brazil 1958

    Edit

Played group games in Sweden then got injured
…unless he's excluded for not playing in the final.

You didn't mention it being against Hibs in your OP.

Wiki have him as a World Cup winner in 1958 under the name Mazzola but he did not play in the final scoring in the earlier rounds

He also played for Italy after securing citizenship but sadly no cigar

No worries. Obviously whatever 'rules' are put on it are arbitrary anyway.

There was a game at ER which the Huns won 1-0.
Hibs were all over them and Sauzee in particular was giving Charbonnier a torrid time but he pulled off some world class saves.

what about Gazza for Rangers against us...surely them English must have won the World Cup with Him in the side, Gary Walkers Crisps up front and Terry "conceding the first goal, removes the fear...." Butcher at the back ????

Jack Charlton played for Leeds against us in the Fairs Cup in 1968.

That's the one I was thinking of. Definitely did play at ER I have since seen. So was a World Cup winner playing against us. Didn't actually play all that many games for Huns but more than he did for France in 98!

Wondered that myself but he wasn’t in the West Germany squad 1974. Did score at ER though.

Will Martinez be the first World Cup holder who actually played in the final to play at ER?

Edit - not quite. Jack Charlton in 1968.

Lionel Charbonnier won the WC with France in 1998 (though never played a game) and played at ER in 1999 with Rangers. Guivarc'h had already left Rangers by that point.

    Match report here:

Actually there is another World Cup winner who has played at Easter Road this century.

Juninho won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and played against us with Celtic in a 2-2 draw in 2004:

    https://www.thecelticwiki.com/2004-09-19-hibernian-2-2-celtic-spl/

Unlike Charbonnier, he played a few minutes I'm the final.
