    It's basically a location coordinate device which uses words rather than the usual numbers.

    The paragraph entitled "user's" in the Wikipedia link above shows its practical uses

    If you go to what3words.com you can search for an address, for example, and it will give you the 3 word code. If you have the app on your portable device of choice and get into difficulties in an unfamiliar place you can give the emergency services the three word phrase of your current location and they'll easily find you.
