Thread: Nathan Wood

    Nathan Wood

Spotted him yesterday playing piggy in the middle at half time, a good all round defensive display yesterday must have made his chances of getting a game even more remote, maybe waiting for Porteous to be suspended?

Not ideal for Neil Warnock or Nathan that he hasn't broken into the side. Porto has been excellent though and Hanlon is our captain. Is it a season long loan? We'll need him at some point.

He's here as a squad player. He'll maybe get a game if Porteous or another defender is out. Defence are doing fine at the moment.

Did anyone pick up on the accuracy of the guy’s shooting in the warm up drill?

I’d be converting him to a striker. Stokes the ball so cleanly.

He was always just going to be coming in as cover.

That’s why I could never understand why we were looking to pay big money by our standards for McCart. No way he’s any better than Porteous or Hanlon so we’d have spent a fortune for someone to sit on the bench.

He's 6'2" maybe we could play him as a target man up front

Exactly, he was brought in as cover, he’s been available as cover, I don’t see the issue.

The more i see of McCart the more i feel we've dodged a bullet.

He was getting ready to come on at one point yesterday.

Him and Gogic had been warming up, Wood went back in, was standing behind the dug out getting instructions from a tablet or clipboard or something then stood for another minute or 2 before he was told to sit down.

I think he’ll be away in January if he’s not playing. He’s a young player who apparently has lots of potential, sitting on the bench every week won’t be acceptable to him or Middlesbrough. That would be the case with any young player on loan I’d imagine.

    United we stand here....

Two birds, one stone. I like it.

We are going to have to rotate a little at some point - especially around November/December when we play so many games and suspensions hit. It’ll be up to him then to take his chance.

Thought Rooney was outstanding for St J. Looked excellent when he moved more centrally to cover for McCart.

Reminded me of Hanlon …similar standard ..obviously had a mare getting sent off , but outside of that did fine

Can’t imagine him currently being a starter for us though, unless we moved to a three

this he could be playing for Middlesbrough u23's instead against probably better opposition, i can't remember the timing but was he taken on when it looked like josh doig was away.

I’d have no problem with him being recalled in January if Middlesbrough want him to get first team football. He’s their player, and it’s their problem.

I don’t agree that he’d be up against better opposition playing in Middlesbrough U23s. You’d maybe get a few decent players every now and then, but the majority would be guys who, if they came to us on loan, would be a sub.

Did we not do that with Rob Jones on a few occasions?

i had actually used arguably first before changing to probably :) either way the guy is captain of the english u20's and could be pitting himself against a whole different type of player down south

He probably is a good player, but the defence is playing well enough that there’s no reason to play him.

If he was our player then I’d probably argue that we should be giving him minutes, but he’s not, and I couldn’t really care less about developing another teams player, if it’s not directly benefiting us.

Take your point that it’s not Hibs responsibility to develop other teams young players.
But it could give teams down south points to ponder about sending young players up to ER only to find they’re confined to the bench.
Think Wood will get an opportunity sometime, but the longer he doesn’t the more likely it is that Middlesbrough will take action to shorten his loan spell.

Think so and I can’t recall us ever scoring from him playing in the emergency striker role for the last five minutes truth be told.

I couldn't care less but it's quite poor from Middlesbrough sending him to a club where he is unlikely to play. If we've got a good player on the bench waiting to come on then that's all im really bothered about but if i was a Middlesbrough fan i'd be asking a few questions of Warnock especially with them toiling by the looks of it.

Maybe part of the experience he is gaining with us is challenging for a starting spot rather than being gifted one?

He's got to train well, stay patient and be sure to take his chance when he gets it. That's what Middlesbrough are going to want him to do over the next few years.

There's probably a higher chance of him managing to break into the team with us than with them ie less players to get ahead of to get his 1st team game.

It should be a deal that suits all 3 parties and I still think it could be.

There's no way he should have been expecting to breeze in ahead of either Hanlon or Porto but he should be given a fair crack at keeping his position when he eventually gets his chance.

Boro make seek to end the loan early, they may not, but these things happen, especially with keepers and centre backs who are rarely substituted during the game.

I doubt any other club will think twice about loaning us a player based on what has happened with Nathan Wood so far.

Nah me either, but he would have had it not been from one of the best saves I’ve seen Craig Gordon ever make.
