What about the 'penalty' handball incident near the end?
On radio they suggested it could have been given

he headed it into his arm, would have been very harsh, we should have had a pen though for a handball on the line

They have a hard job but I really was sitting and wondering what he actually saw giving some of the decisions he gave. For both sides it has to be said. Baffling.

How that Lino missed the deflection for the corner was criminal. It wasn’t even a slight deflection.

Assistant referees are there to assist the referee. Most referees appreciate that assistants are qualified officials and at the top level are specialists in their assistant role (which is a harder job than the ref). They make it clear what they expect of the asistant and work with them through the game to maximise the impact on the game.

Unfortunately Mr Collum is one of the referee's who doesn't value his assistants. I was unfortunate enough to be allocated to several of his games some years ago and he made it clear he expects you to participate in throw ins only and even then he asks you to look at him and see what way he indictates before pointing the flag. At no time are you to undermine him by indicating a decision different to the one he gave.

The assistant possibly knew all along that it was a corner but if Collum indicated a goal kick then that is what he will signal.

He is a poor referee and in my opinion not s nice person. He fits the bill for a senior ref in Scotland though!!!

Thanks for the personal insight what you describe is pretty obvious when you see linesman waiting to see what they ref will give. It doesnt look great however appreciate there needs to be coordination and communication between the two.

I genuinely get the impression when watching him ref that he doesnt really understand the game. General things like knowing when a player is genuinely trying to hurt another player.

I hope this sort of behaviour is reported back to the SPFL, clearly he needs retrained or even binned!

There were a few characters in refereeing in the "old days"

A certain professor Underhill refused to let the assistants use his first name John, you had to call him Mr Underhill.

Willie Young, Hugh Dallas on the other hand were really good fun and knew how to use assistants to make their own game performance better.

That is utter nonsense about John Underhill, so mistaken it's farcical.

That clearly didn’t happen yesterday at the deflection. Collum looked directly at the linesman for guidance for a good few seconds before awarding a goal kick.

He was but the Lino would have had a much better view of it being deflected.

Where did Collum referee games before he worked his way up the leagues?

I remember playing in a dodgy West Lothian league about 16-17 years ago. There was a young lad who refereed a couple of games that I played in, I thought he was superb and destined for big things if he wanted to be (most referees at that level are pish at best). With the passage of time I wondered if it could have been Collum, as he looks a bit like how I remember this guy as being.

Brilliant communicator and as a player he talked with you throughout games, explaining stuff and diffusing situations (rather than being bullied by the hard men).

He seemed to get a lot of simple calls wrong yesterday, and I could certainly relate to what you say above - it looked like he wanted to over-rule linesmen who were clearly in a better position to make a call than he was.

Utter garbage, ran John’s line on many occasions and he was 100% of the view when we went out, we were a team and performed better with full co-operation - and I only ever knew him as John !

John Underhill was a superb referee. I think him being English and therefore somewhat impartial to Scottish football “traditions” helped. Used to see him wandering around Riccarton as well when I was at Heriot Watt.

Had a similar experience in the 90s with Peter Taylor . Brilliant ref. Got where he deserved but got hounded for too many reds in the SPL. His weak spot was foul and abusive language. Mystery knee problem and early retirement...
