Thanks for ruining an otherwise decent game. Fanny.

What about the 'penalty' handball incident near the end?
On radio they suggested it could have been given

They have a hard job but I really was sitting and wondering what he actually saw giving some of the decisions he gave. For both sides it has to be said. Baffling.

Assistant referees are there to assist the referee. Most referees appreciate that assistants are qualified officials and at the top level are specialists in their assistant role (which is a harder job than the ref). They make it clear what they expect of the asistant and work with them through the game to maximise the impact on the game.
Unfortunately Mr Collum is one of the referee's who doesn't value his assistants. I was unfortunate enough to be allocated to several of his games some years ago and he made it clear he expects you to participate in throw ins only and even then he asks you to look at him and see what way he indictates before pointing the flag. At no time are you to undermine him by indicating a decision different to the one he gave.
The assistant possibly knew all along that it was a corner but if Collum indicated a goal kick then that is what he will signal.
He is a poor referee and in my opinion not s nice person. He fits the bill for a senior ref in Scotland though!!!

I genuinely get the impression when watching him ref that he doesnt really understand the game. General things like knowing when a player is genuinely trying to hurt another player.Last edited by JimBHibees; 13-08-2018 at 07:04 AM.

There were a few characters in refereeing in the "old days"
A certain professor Underhill refused to let the assistants use his first name John, you had to call him Mr Underhill.
Willie Young, Hugh Dallas on the other hand were really good fun and knew how to use assistants to make their own game performance better.

I remember playing in a dodgy West Lothian league about 16-17 years ago. There was a young lad who refereed a couple of games that I played in, I thought he was superb and destined for big things if he wanted to be (most referees at that level are pish at best). With the passage of time I wondered if it could have been Collum, as he looks a bit like how I remember this guy as being.
Brilliant communicator and as a player he talked with you throughout games, explaining stuff and diffusing situations (rather than being bullied by the hard men).
He seemed to get a lot of simple calls wrong yesterday, and I could certainly relate to what you say above - it looked like he wanted to over-rule linesmen who were clearly in a better position to make a call than he was.

John Underhill was a superb referee. I think him being English and therefore somewhat impartial to Scottish football “traditions” helped. Used to see him wandering around Riccarton as well when I was at Heriot Watt.
