Is it just me but why are we signing so many midfielders / wingers
Surely we need more cover in defence

Why No Defenders

I don’t think we do. Gray, Efe and Whittaker can play right back, Boyle can play right wing back when we play a 3. In the centre we’ve got Efe, Daz, Hanlon and Porteous and on the left we have Stevenson with Hanlon and Whittaker able to fill in as emergency left backs. I would’ve thought if we’re playing a 3 and Stevenson wasn’t fit, Horgan could also play there.
You found your God in a paper back, you get your history from the Union Jack, and all your brothers and sisters have gone and they won't come back.

I would imagine a deep lying midfielder is our next priority.
We have four central defenders and options to cover full back/ wing back roles comfortably on either flank. That’s why we haven’t signed defenders.

Outscore your opponents and you’ll win every game. Might not lead to the healthiest goal differential but hey,ho.

4th best defence in the league last year. Another year settled. These high scoring games were not the norm.

As soon as we get a baller in the middle of the park we could be in for another decent season

I'm hoping Sean Mackie and Andrew Blake will kick on so that we don't have to sign any defenders

So long as McGregor's knee problems don't turn into a bigger problem for him and us we are pretty sorted at CH with Porteous clearly showing he is up for the challenge. We are fine on the right with Sir David looking back to his best and Efe doing ok there in a three. Boyle can also do a decent job defensively if he has to. Its the left that worries me, we have gone for years without a specialist left back / wingback to cover for Lewis, and IMO the fact that the guy is made of steel and never gets injured has been our good luck … it wont last for ever and for me Hanlon has never been particularly successful at LB the times he has been asked to play there and Whittaker sure as hell isn't a long term solution.

Ryan Porteous breaking through has meant we don’t need to sign another defender imo.

Any defender we sign would be aware they're almost certainly here to sit on the bench.
I think we'd struggle to sign better quality for the starting XI than we currently have.

McGregor is great at being no nonsense but 3 McGregors would be dreadful.

Quick, physical games when we're being pressed then he's not the man.
Weaker teams at home who let us have it, I think he can still get a foot on the ball and be a very useful option.

We're fortunate at the moment to have four first choice CHs, so we'd struggle to find anyone good enough to play for us who'd also be willing to sit on the bench as cover if one of them is out and spend the rest of the time in the stand.
I'd think Gray and Whittaker are the emergency depth there, or even Stevenson after he filled in for a game last year. Not sure about the youths - maybe Waugh or Stirling?Mature, sensible signature required for responsible position. Good prospects for the right candidate. Apply within.

We probably need another centre back if daz isn't going to be fit as we are one injury away from a change of shape.
On the other hand last year we had fonts as well and it was a waste of a wage as he got no game time.

Agree with the OP in some respects. We now have plenty options in midfield and up front, but looking at our defensive options I fear we could be a bit light in the event of a couple of injuries or suspensions.

I'd have absolutely no problem having Sean as back up or a first pick. I do think we need another right back which is why I'm surprised we didn't progress the Ryan Williamson deal. He's another who could really develop into a cracking player under the right manager.
