FAO Skylar - Highest ever temperature in Edinburgh

I've been trying to find out what's the highest recorded temperature in Edinburgh but I'm not having much success.

Is there any way for me to find this out?

The same information about York would be good too.

I've found somewhere that says the highest in Edinburgh was 31.4, but I can't find a figure for York.

If Skylar doesn't know, maybe Sylar will. 🤪

I saw that but it was only for records between 1998 and 2010.

There is (sadly) no quality database for the UK that's openly available to the public.

The Met Office data is probably as good as you're likely to get, and that's often temporally limited to when their official instruments were installed.

There are paper documents published by the Met Office, Royal Met Society, Met Scotland society etc, and some of these are available online, but they're not easily interrogated over long periods.

If you're genuinely interested, I can check the database I access via work tomorrow - that has historical data from across the UK dating back to 1860 in some places.

I only had a cursory glance today Radge, but the highest temperature I could find for York was from 1906 (during a well documented heatwave), where there was a temperature of 34.9C recorded.

It isn't quite city centre, but it's as close as I could find.

What do you do Sylar, if you don't mind me asking? I remember you helping me with my studies a few years ago, which clearly helped as I now work in the same area!

I'm a research fellow with Stanford University and the Fraser of Allander Institute - I do research around the impacts of environmental change on water, and what that means from an economic and policy perspective.

I knew I had helped someone on here at some point, but I couldn't quite remember who it was! Glad you've managed to get on and come into the same field
