Great read. Guy clearly used his situation to motivate himself to achieve something.

With De Bruyne and Hazard supporting you, you'd have to be wearing a club foot not to score.

    Great story.

You wonder if a lack of hunger, quite literally, is what's missing from a lot of players. So many are taken into plush surroundings with the best of everything at 8 or 9 year old. Seens Lukaku scrapped for everything he's got.

Interesting read - the photos of him playing for Anderlecht's youth team are crazy, not surprised the parents were asking for ID!

Great story and hats off to him amazingly dedication. Horrendous journalism, written like a script for an American b movie.

That was fantastic. I think a lot of people (myself included sometimes) assume players have the easy life, and probably always have.

Great story. Not just a top player either, seems very intelligent. I'm impressed when someone can speak two languages, but to be able to speak seven fluently is something else. If he decides to go into management when he finishes playing he won't have a problem with the communication to the different nationalities in the team.

without wanting to be a downer here...

that's the sort of story that tories love, because on the surface, it shows that all you need to do is work hard and everything will work out fine.

the fact is, he couldn't have got anywhere near where he did without talent, and football was in his family.

there's no doubting that you need that mentality to be one of the top top top players though, and it's a great story in terms of showing how negatives in life can be turned into positives. fair play to the guy

    True dat.

The flip side of the ‘you can be whatever you want to be’ is that, if you fail, it’s your fault.

I am fairly confident that, even if I had dedicated every waking moment of my life to it, I would never have made the grade as a professional footballer.

People from privileged backgrounds consistently underplay the support they received and credit their success to their ‘talent’.

But well done to Lukaku though. No one gets to where he has without hard work. He might not feel lucky, but having a pro footballer as a dad is obviously a bit of an advantage.

I don't think he did. He was interviewed, as per the video. Bloke on Totally Football podcast said he did the interview so I assume he ghost wrote the story.

I hear what the guys above are saying but it doesn't make Lukaku's story any less impressive and it is there as a positive example for others to follow, especially if they are seen by some as outcasts.
