7 games 3 wins 3 defeats and a draw, and things are looking up for them.

They probably believe in the tooth fairy too.

Glad Hazard got a goal there. Fantastic work rate, and player of the tournament for me.

Watch the media slowly turn against Southgate when the realisation hits that they have not actually had that good a tournament. It's coming home to roost.

They’re “6-7 years behind Belgium”. If they weren’t disadvantaged they would’ve won that game about 4-0.

Someone should tell him that's England's average age was 26 and Belgium was 27

You sense this was a one-of opportunity for England - like no other. Next time, the English media and fan expectations will revert to normal over the top. They'll be "champions in waiting" and the pressure on Southgate and his English chumps will be absolutely massive before they trip over their egos.

Feel sorry for Southgate. Comes across as a genuinely nice guy. They are going to destroy him.

Semi final is a good tournament by most standards. Excellent for England.

England went into the World Cup rated 12th in the world. They reached the semi-final but didn't beat anyone rated higher, having lost twice to their only higher-rated opponents. They deserve praise for what they've achieved, but need to maintain perspective too.

Despite being the “4th best team at the tournament” they deserve to actually drop down the rankings

They were mediocre against poor opponents

If they had won on Wednesday they would have been the worse team ever to reach a World Cup

A really poor team who played on their matches at the same ground then were given a goal when the ball didn’t Cross the line won it in 66. That gave one player the first ever recorded 2 goal hat trick in history. I am not bitter though..........

Remember also that the presence of spectators on the pitch should have ruled out the fourth goal.

That was after Pele was hacked out of the tournament and a West German referee sent off an Argentinian in the quarter-final against England while an English referee was sending off two Uruguayans against West Germany. Now I'm not a conspiracy theorists, but ...........

Aye right Gary still slavering, wise up to the fact that they are 4th in the world, we are toiling to be 4th in Britain

To attempt to summarise from a neutral, dispassionate perspective: England played 2 decent teams and lost to 3 of them (with thanks to my uncle for that one). One has a population less than a tenth of England's, the other roughly a quarter. England beat Tunisia, Panama, and Sweden, and drew with Colombia.

    World domination surely beckons.

I know we are sheite, you will probably find it hard to find a Scotsman who does not think that. England on the other hand, will never have a better chance than they just passed up.

7 games and only 3 wins against Panama Tunisia and Sweden, Christ almighty, i think even Scotland might have beaten them.

Yet nobody is claiming that World domination beckons although there are plenty of Scots wishing all the pundits had claimed that. There was general agreement before, during and now after their participation that this England team is well away from being one of the top teams in the world. I wouldn’t even put them in the top ten. They do have a decent base to build on now though and it looks like they have the right manager to keep things moving forward.
Croatia have kicked the population argument in to to touch although the SFA will no doubt continue to use it to excuse our continuing failure.

Since when was getting to the world cup semi-final not that good?

I'd love it if Scotland ever had such a poor tournament.

They had a party down south for 4 weeks whilst England had a piss poor World Cup. It must have been hell for them.

I read after the semi-final that Southgate said he expects them to move into the top ten in the next couple of years. They might, but the squad will need to show considerable progress for that to happen. It's been an extraordinary WC in that only one of the traditional big guns, France obviously, has shown the form expected of them and I can't believe that Germany, Argentina, and Brazil (to a lesser extent) along with countries like Italy and the Netherlands who didn't qualify, will tolerate such levels of failure again.

Of course, now the tournament is coming to an end with England's involvement over, it's time to focus on Scotland again. As you say, Croatia have blown apart the population myth (as the likes of Denmark have done previously) so any attempt by the SFA or Scotland managers to use that argument going forward will be rightly mocked.
