    Volcanic eruption in Hawaii

Itís been pretty low key as far as the news is concerned, but this eruption could go on for years. The threat to life is low, but the fact that these are volcanic islands means that without the volcano they wouldnít exist. The latest eruption is just a continuation of what has formed the islands in the first place. Itís an irony that places like this are such fertile grounds for people to farm and thrive.

The minerals required for plant growth are contained in the ash from volcanic eruptions, a local (to me) garden has done lots of research on the properties of 'rock dust'

Scotland can be a beacon, within these islands and beyond, for a socially just and sustainable society. Whilst there are many priorities which will require independence, there is also much that can and must be done now by the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish Government.

It's the same in Edinburgh. When you're driving in from the east you can still see the ridges dug into Arthur's Seat where prehistoric farmers grew crops.
