If you live in Edinburgh (or EH postcode area I think) get yourself a Library card.
Gives you access to loads of online material for FREE.
Best one, and what I use regularly, is access to most UK daily newspapers and a whole host of weekly, monthly magazines covering many subjects. These are accessed via a couple of Apps - PressReader and/or RBDigital.

Here’s a link to get you started for those in Edinburgh.

    http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/201...m_your_library

Even if you’re not in Edinburgh area, pretty sure other local councils provide a similar service, so might be worth looking up your Council’s website to check.
Ive recently taken out a library card for the first time since my childhood. Not used the online stuff, but overall its brilliant.

    Stores may vary.

After polishing shoes use a damp cotton wool pad to put a bit extra polish on the toes and heel. Brush and repeat a few times and you get a brilliant shine.

And the one about putting a phone/tablet/laptop in rice if it gets wet really does work.
It doesn’t work when the phone has got wet with salt water. The salt corrodes the circuits as I found out to my coat when I went for a dip in the sea on holiday forgetting my phone was in my pocket.

Cut a large bar of soap into smaller sizes and it won't break your toe when it slips from your hands in the shower first time you use it.

Good idea - wouldn't want to be a soap dodger.

Don’t know if already posted. If you don’t have a pound coin or a token to use for a supermarket trolley, use the round end of a Yale key which fits perfectly.

Potentially putting quite a bit more security down than the hire of a supermarket trolley is worth though

Most cars petrol gauge has a symbol like a petrol pump or whatever..next to that is a wee arrow, but only on one side.

The side the arrow points to is the side the petrol cap is on.

If you need to work out what direction you're going but don't have a compass. Point the hour hand of your watch at the sun and the middle point between the hour hand and 12 is due south.

In the southern hemisphere it's north.

I’ve read this before but it’s not true. Or at least it’s not true everywhere, I used this logic in a rental car in America and got out to find I was on the wrong side

Edit: after reading up online I always thought it was the side that the nozzle was on the picture, but as you said, it’s the arrow, not the nozzle.

If there is no arrow, it’s often the nozzle side, if there’s an arrow then it’s that.

Yes, but for some reason, it's not always the nozzle either.

And that reminds me of something else...I'm off to the pet peeves thread...

So does due South change, for example, between 8.00am & 8.00pm?

Take a multi-plug extension cable on holiday with you in your suitcase & you’ll only need 1 travel adaptor.
I know it’s been said before but currently on holiday and this is excellent. 3 iPhones and a kindle all on charge as we speak!

    Brilliant - thanks for this!

Discovered the other day that freezing then defrosting butter makes it much more spreadable.

    Is this common knowledge?!

If you buy new bars of soap take them out of the wrapper and store in a cold place. They'll last longer.
    Ye'll not regret it.

How much longer do you want a bar of soap to last 🤔

Edit: are you suggesting some people only buy used/second hand bars of soap?
    I'm intrigued.

This made me laugh way more than it should have. I'm away to get some of my old soap listed on eBay. Could be a proper earner 🤣

It probably will be. You hear about all these folk that make a fortune selling their hair/pants/nail clippings

I walked past a guy in the street once who asked if he could buy my shoes off me. They were destroyed so if I was closer to home I’d have happily sold them to him and he could have chugged himself into oblivion all he wanted. Unfortunately it was raining and I was about a half hour walk away

same thing is happened to me , I leave lemon juice on it for some time then scratch it with a sharp object and it works for me.
